In a state where a distance from an ejection port surface of an ejection head to a predetermined position corresponds to a first distance, a period detection unit detects a first period from when ejection of a droplet from an ejection port is started until when a droplet detection unit detects the droplet, and in a state where the distance from the ejection port surface of the ejection head to the predetermined position is changed to a second distance by a change unit, the period detection unit detects a second period from when ejection of a droplet from the ejection port is started until when the droplet detection unit detects the droplet, the second distance being different from the first distance. A calculation unit calculates an ejection speed of the droplet, based on the first distance, the second distance, the first period, and the second period.

An embodiment of the present invention is a printing apparatus including: a print head including a plurality of nozzles configured to eject droplets onto a print medium; a control unit configured to control driving of each of the plurality of nozzles to eject the droplets; and an inspection unit configured to inspect whether or not each of the plurality of nozzles is able to eject the droplets normally by driving the print head by the control unit, wherein in a case where the inspection unit inspects one target nozzle among the plurality of nozzles, the control unit drives the target nozzle and one or more neighboring nozzles arranged near the target nozzle.

A discharge head includes an orifice surface in which orifices each configured to discharge a droplet are arrayed in a predetermined direction. A detecting unit includes a light emitting element and a light receiving element, and optically detects a droplet discharged from the orifice. A suppression unit is arranged between the light emitting element and the orifice surface, and suppresses the light emitted from the light emitting element from reaching the orifice surface by shielding at least some rays of the light which are emitted from the light emitting element and would otherwise propagate to the orifice surface.

According to an embodiment the present invention, a printing apparatus detects a distance between a printhead and a print medium using a sensor while using a print medium for sensor calibration and changing a height from a print position to a carriage, stores first distance information indicating a relationship between the height and a signal representing a result of detecting the distance for each of heights in a memory, obtains second distance information indicating a relationship between the height and the signal representing the result of detecting the distance for each of the heights while using a predetermined print medium and changing the height, compares the first and second distance information, and corrects the first distance information stored in the memory, based on a result of the comparison.

Printing apparatus and calibration method thereof

A liquid ejection apparatus has an ejection orifice ejecting a liquid, a liquid storage section storing the liquid, a conductive communication path forming member forming a communication path to supply the liquid from the liquid storage section to the ejection orifice, and an electrode provided inside the liquid storage section and used to detect a remaining amount of the liquid. The communication path is electrically connected to the electrode, and the electrical resistance value between the electrode and the communication path contacting the liquid when the liquid is present in the liquid storage section is smaller than the electrical resistance value between the electrode and the communication path when the liquid is not present in the liquid storage section. A recording apparatus incorporating the above features can detect the presence or absence of ink in the recording head with high precision without increasing the size of the recording head.
