A tool having a cutting edge that includes a sintered body containing cubic boron nitride. The sintered body integrally and inseparably includes an inner region and a binder phase enriched layer formed on at least part of a surface of the inner region. The inner region includes: 15-90 volume % of cubic boron nitride; and 10-85 volume % of a mixture of a binder phase and impurities. The binder phase enriched layer includes: 90-100 volume % of the binder phase and impurities mixture; and 0-10 volume % of cubic boron nitride; and the binder phase contains at least one kind selected from the group consisting of: at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Al, Co, Ni and Si; and a compound of the element and at least one element selected from the group consisting of C, N, O and B.

Tool and coated tool

Provided is a coated cutting tool comprising a substrate and a coating layer formed on a surface of the substrate. The coating layer includes an alternating laminate structure of an alternating laminate of: a first composite nitride layer including a compound having a composition represented by (TiAl)N (wherein x denotes an atomic ratio of the Ti element based on a total of the Ti element and the Al element and satisfies 0.10&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.35); and a second composite nitride layer including a compound having a composition represented by (TiAlM)N (wherein: M denotes an element of at least one kind selected from Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Si and Y; y satisfies 0.30&#x2264;y&#x2264;0.90; z satisfies 0.10&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.70; and y and z satisfy y+z&#x2264;1). The first composite nitride layer includes a phase having a lattice constant of from 0.400 nm or more to 0.430 nm or less and a phase having a lattice constant of from 0.755 nm or more to 0.810 nm or less.

The coated tool has a substrate and a coating layer. The coating layer contains alternating first and second laminated structures. The first laminated structure contains at least two kinds of alternating layers having different compositions. An average thickness of the layers contained in the first laminated structure is 60 nm or more and 500 nm or less. The second laminated structure contains at least two kinds of alternating layers having different compositions. An average thickness of the layers contained in the second laminated structure is 2 nm or more and less than 60 nm. The layers contained in the first laminated structure and the second laminated structure contain a compound having one or more specific metals and at least one or more of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and boron. Average thickness(es) of the first and second laminated structure is/are continuously or stepwisely increased in a direction away from the substrate.

A coated cutting tool comprising a substrate and a coating layer formed on a surface of the substrate is provided, the coating layer including an alternating laminate structure in which two or more compound layers of each of two or three or more kinds, each kind having a different composition, are laminated in an alternating manner, wherein: the alternating laminate structure is constituted by: a compound layer containing a compound having a composition represented by (TiM)N [wherein M denotes an element of at least one kind selected from the group consisting of Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Al and Si, x denotes an atomic ratio of Ti based on a total of Ti and an element denoted by M, and x satisfies 0.57&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.91]; and a compound layer containing a compound having a composition represented by (TiM)N [wherein M denotes an element of at least one kind selected from the group consisting of Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Al and Si, y denotes an atomic ratio of Ti based on a total of Ti and an element denoted by M, and y satisfies 0.61&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.95]; an absolute value of a difference between an amount of a specific metal element contained in a compound layer which constitutes the alternating laminate structure relative to an amount of all the metal elements contained therein and an amount of the specific metal element contained in another compound layer which is adjacent to the compound layer and which constitutes the alternating laminate structure relative to an amount of all the metal elements contained therein, is more than 0 atom % and less than 5 atom %; and an average thickness of each of the compound layers is from 1 nm or more to 50 nm or less, and an average thickness of the alternating laminate structure is from 1.5 &#x3bc;m or more to 15.0 &#x3bc;m or less.

A coated tool includes a substrate and a coating layer having a plurality of first laminated structures alternated with a plurality of second laminated structures. Each of the first laminated structures and each of the second laminated structures contains at least two kinds of layers having different composition and alternately laminated twice or more. An average thickness of the layers contained in the first laminated structure is between 60 nm and 500 nm, while an average thickness of the layers contained in the second laminated structure is between 2 nm and 60 nm. Each of the layers within the laminated structures include at least one metal element and at least one non-metal element selected from among carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and boron. An average thickness of the first laminated structure and/or the second laminated structure decreases with increasing distance from the substrate.

A cBN sintered body has 40%-85% cBN by volume and 15% to 60% binder phase by volume. and inevitable impurities. The binder phase has an Al compound including Al and at least one element selected from N, O and B, and a Zr compound including Zr and at least one element selected from C, N, O and B. The Zr compound includes ZrO, or ZrO and ZrO. In an X-ray diffraction, where a peak intensity of a (111) plane of the ZrO is I, a peak intensity of a (101) plane of tetragonal ZrOis Iand a peak intensity of a (111) plane of cubic ZrOis I, a ratio of the intensity of Ito total intensities of I, Iand Iis 0.6-1.0, and an average grain size of the Al compound is 80 nm-300 nm.

Cubic boron nitride sintered body and coated cubic boron nitride sintered body

A coated cutting tool has a base material of a WC-based cemented carbide and a film formed on the surface of the base material by a chemical vapor deposition method. The coated cutting tool has a rake face, a flank face and a cutting edge ridgeline part positioned between the rake face and the flank face being provided, wherein a total film thickness of the entire film is 3 to 20 &#x3bc;m in an average film thickness, and one or more oblique cracks where an extension angle of the crack to the surface of the film is 45&#xb0; or less are present at the rake face within 300 &#x3bc;m from the cutting edge ridgeline part.

A coated cutting tool with improved abrasion resistance and chipping resistance in which a cemented carbine substrate has a coating film formed on a surface of the substrate by chemical vapor deposition. The coating film includes a lower film with the average film thickness of 2 to 15 &#x3bc;m, formed on the surface of the substrate, and an aluminum oxide upper film, with an average film thickness of 1 to 10 &#x3bc;m, formed on a surface of the lower film. The lower film is an alternate laminated film formed by alternately stacking TiN films; each having the average thickness of 10 to 300 nm, and TiCN films each having the average thickness of 0.1 to 0.5 &#x3bc;m.
