A phase difference film includes a small change in tint when the film is applied to a display device as a circularly polarizing plate in combination with a polarizer display device being observed from an oblique direction at all azimuthal angles. The film includes optically anisotropic layers X, Y, and Z in this order, in which layer X is an A-plate, and layers Y and Z are formed by fixing a first and second liquid crystal compound, respectively, twist-aligned along a helical axis extending in a thickness direction, one of the first and second liquid crystal compounds are rod-like liquid crystal compounds, the other first and the second liquid crystal compounds are disk-like liquid crystal compounds, and an in-plane slow axis of layer X is parallel to an in-plane slow axis on a surface of layer Y on layer X side.

Phase difference film, circularly polarizing plate, and display device

Provided are a phase difference film that has a small change in tint in a case where the phase difference film is combined with a polarizer and then applied as a circularly polarizing plate to a display device, and the display device is observed from an oblique direction at all azimuthal angles; as well as a circularly polarizing plate and a display device. The phase difference film includes a first optically anisotropic layer, a second optically anisotropic layer, a third optically anisotropic layer, and a fourth optically anisotropic layer in this order, in which the first optically anisotropic layer is a C-plate, the second optically anisotropic layer is an A-plate, the third optically anisotropic layer is a layer formed by fixing a liquid crystal compound twist-aligned along a helical axis extending in a thickness direction, and the first, second, third, and fourth optically anisotropic layers have a predetermined configuration.

The present invention provides a circularly polarizing plate capable of reducing the amount of change in tint and a difference in reflectivity while achieving thinning of a display device and a display device having the same. The circularly polarizing plate of the present invention includes a polarizer, a transparent support, an optically anisotropic layer including a liquid crystal compound in this order, in which the optically anisotropic layer satisfies Expression (1) and the transparent support has a thickness of 50 &#x3bc;m or less and satisfied Expression (2), 100&#x2264;Re(550)&#x2264;180 nm . . . (1) and 1.00&#x2264;R&#x2264;1.20 . . . (2), in Expression (1), Re(550) represents an in-plane retardation of the optically anisotropic layer at a wavelength of 550 nm and in Expression (2), R represents a ratio between a maximum value and a minimum value of modulus of elasticity of the transparent support.

Circularly polarizing plate and display device

The present invention provides a circularly polarizing plate that improves the visibility of black color in an oblique direction when being applied to a display device and having a small thickness, the display device including a circularly polarizing plate. The circularly polarizing plate is a circularly polarizing plate including, in this order, a polarizer, a &#x3bb;/2 plate, and a &#x3bb;/4 plate, in which the &#x3bb;/2 plate is a laminate of a first A-plate and a first C-plate, the &#x3bb;/4 plate is a laminate of a second A-plate and a second C-plate, one of the first C-plate and the second C-plate is a cellulose acylate film having a predetermined Rth, and the other of the first C-plate and the second C-plate is an optically anisotropic layer including a liquid crystal compound having a predetermined Rth or a cellulose acylate film having a predetermined Rth.
