An apparatus and method for transmitting information bits via an optical communication system, the apparatus including a distribution matcher (DM) configured to receive information bits and to generate shaped symbols relating to the information bits; a pre-deinterleaver (PDI) coupled to the DM and configured to apply a perturbation function q(n) to the shaped symbols to produce pre-deinterleaved symbols; an error reduction processor (ERP) coupled to the PDI and configured to receive computer instructions which, when executed, prompt the ERP to produce error reduction symbols from the pre-deinterleaved symbols, the error reduction symbols being perturbed from the pre-deinterleaved symbols by a perturbation function p(n), q(n) being an inverse of p(n); and a modulator coupled to the ERP and configured to convert the error reduction symbols into optical signals configured for transmission via an optical communication system.

Coherent detection with remotely delivered local oscillators

Methods and apparatus for reducing the oscillation of a MEMS actuator. In one embodiment, a driving signal is generated to adjust the MEMS actuator through a set of driving wires coupled to the MEMS actuator. A motion-induced signal from the set of driving wires coupled to the MEMS actuator is received in response to the driving signal. The motion-induced signal is filtered to generate a filtered motion-induced signal. The filtered motion-induced signal is amplified to generate an amplified filtered motion-induced signal. The driving signal is adjusted based on the amplified filtered motion-induced signal to reduce the oscillation of the MEMS actuator.

Active MEMS damping

Narrow linewidth multi-wavelength (MW) light sources and related methods are disclosed. Such a light source includes gain chips coupled to a wavelength combiner and reflection chip that includes phase control sections (PCSs), a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM), and a micro-ring resonator (MRR) based reflector. The WDM combines light beams received from the gain chips, via the PCSs, into a combined light beam. The MRR based reflector receives the combined light beam and generates both a reflection MW light beam and a transmission MW light beam. The WDM receives the reflection MW light beam, separates it into different wavelengths, and provides each different wavelength of light via a respective one of the PCSs to a respective one of the gain chips to self seed an internal laser cavity thereof. The transmission MW light beam is, or is used to produce, the narrow linewidth MW light produced by the light source.

Approaches to Compact External Grating PBS/PBC Coupling are described according to embodiments of the present invention. In one embodiment, a YVO4 crystal is used to split a beam or combine multiple beams into a single beam. A lens is used to convert a mode of the light to match a mode of a grating port. A glass wedge is designed to bend the light from horizontal to a nearly vertical orientation to match an exit angle of a grating port. When a source or a receiver utilizes an optical fiber, a fiber holder may be used to bond the fiber to the source or receiver. The PBS/PBC described has much less insertion loss compared to existing 2D grating coupler techniques, and has a wider spectral bandwidth due to flexibility in mode matching compared to existing 2D grating couplers. The PBS/PBC described herein also has a better polarization-extinction ratio than the existing 2D grating couplers, and the horizontal coupling configuration enables a design that is thinner and more compact compared to the near vertical coupling in 2D grating coupling.

A metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) optical modulator including a doped semiconductor layer having a waveguide structure, a dielectric layer disposed over the waveguide structure of the doped semiconductor layer, a gate region disposed over the dielectric layer, wherein the gate region comprises a transparent electrically conductive material having a refractive index lower than that of silicon, and a metal contact disposed over the gate region. The metal contact, the gate region, and the waveguide structure of the doped semiconductor layer may be vertically aligned with each other.

Methods, apparatus, and systems are provided including an electro-absorption modulator (EAM) with local temperature control for optical communication. One aspect provides an optical EAM including a semiconductor portion configured to modulate light for transmission or reception of an optical signal. The modulator includes a temperature sensing element configured to sense temperature and to provide an output signal based on the sensed temperature, and a temperature control element configured to control temperature of the semiconductor portion based on the output signal from the temperature sensing element. In one example, the semiconductor portion includes germanium silicon (GeSi).

An optical modulator comprises a silicon substrate, a buried oxide (BOX) layer disposed on top of the silicon substrate, and a ridge waveguide disposed on top of the BOX layer and comprising a first n-type silicon (n-Si) slab, a first gate oxide layer coupled to the first n-Si slab, a first p-type silicon (p-Si) slab coupled to the first gate oxide layer, and a light propagation path that travels sequentially through the first n-Si slab, the first gate oxide layer, and the first p-Si slab.

An apparatus for direct detection transmission for CAP modulated signal with two unbalanced optical sidebands separated by gaps is disclosed, in which a gapped CAP signal is generated, converted, and passed to an optical filter for unbalanced sidebands generation and wavelength locking before being transmitted over an optical link. Direct detection is performed on the optical signal and passed to gapped matching filters. Channel equalization is performed and the signal information is decoded to binary data.

Method and apparatus for directly detected optical transmission systems based on carrierless amplitude-phase modulation

An apparatus comprising a transmitter configured to generate an optical signal comprising a carrier modulated with at least two sidebands modulated with information, wherein the information introduces a separation gap in a frequency domain between the sidebands and the carrier, wherein one of the sidebands is an undesired sideband and another one of the sidebands is a desired sideband with a higher power intensity than the undesired sideband. A method comprising receiving an optical carrier from a light source and modulating the optical carrier with at least two sidebands modulated with information, wherein the information introduces a separation gap in a frequency domain between the sidebands and the optical carrier, wherein one of the sidebands is an undesired sideband and another one of the sidebands is a desired sideband having a higher power intensity than the undesired sideband.
