There is a need for a compact instrument and microscope that maps the vibration fingerprints of biomolecules and chemicals in a sample such as brain, breast, cervix, and arteries. One can use spontaneous Raman scattering to accomplish this; however, the problem is low scattering efficiency to 10. With the availability of continuous wave diode laser at numerous wavelengths from 375 nm-1800 nm for parametric nonlinear difference vibrational mixing to enhance Stimulated Raman process within materials. A seed beam at Raman frequency is used with pump laser beam. In this way one can map in 2D and 3D images of the vibrations associate with disease changes. Scanning a pair of laser beams can map the location of vibrations within cells, smears, membranes, arteries, and tissues of animal and human.

A rectal near infrared (NIR) scanning polarization imaging system uses NIR Photonic Prostatoscopy Analyzer (NIRPPA) for prostate cancer detection using light. The NIRPPA consists of a portable rectal NIR scanning polarization imaging unit and an optical fiber-based rectal probe capable of recording sets of 2D images of a prostate through rectum at different wavelengths and depths and obtaining a three dimensional (3D) image of the prostate and 3D locations of abnormal tissue inside the prostate. Diode lasers/light emission diodes (LEDs) with selected emitting wavelengths are used in the NIR spectral range from 650 nm to 2,400 nm corresponding to the four tissue optical windows (#I, 650 nm-950 nm; #II, 1,100 nm-1,350 nm; #III, 1,600 nm-1,870 nm; and #IV, 2,100 nm-2,300 nm). The fingerprint absorptions of water (HO), Oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) in the prostate are used as native biomarkers for prostate cancer detection.

A method and apparatus for determining petrophysical parameters within a geologic formation pressurizes a geologic sample through a set of predetermined effective pressures, energizes the sample at each predetermined effective pressure with an electric current and/or sonic energy, and measures a conductivity value (electrical conductivity and/or sonic velocity). Permeability and/or porosity are also measured at each pressure through a traditional method and the functions are compared so that permeability and/or porosity can be subsequently derived from a sonic or electrical measurement of a comparable sample under a effective pressure. An apparatus is also described for acquiring the measurements under tri-axial compression, with a computerized interface in one embodiment.

Petrophysical fluid flow property determination

A system for detecting ice formation on metal, painted metal and other material surfaces can include a transparent window having an exterior surface upon which ice can form; a light source and optics configured and arranged to illuminate the exterior surface of the window from behind the exterior surface; and a detector and optics configured and arranged to receive light backscattered by the exterior surface and any ice disposed on the exterior surface and determine the thickness of the ice layer. For example, the system can be used with aircraft by placing one or more windows in the wings of the aircraft. The system is used for a novel optical method for real-time on-board detection and warning of ice formation on surfaces of airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and other vehicles and stationary structures to improve their safety and operation.

The present invention provides systems and methods for non-destructively detecting material abnormalities beneath a coated surface, comprising a mid-infrared (MIR) illumination unit for illuminating an area of the coated surface, and an MIR 2-D imager, which includes an MIR CCD or CMOS camera, for capturing an image of a material abnormalities under the illuminated area of the coated surface. In addition, the system may further comprise a scanning unit for moving the system to a next area.

Systems and methods for non-destructively detecting material abnormalities beneath a coated surface

The present invention provides systems and methods for non-destructively detecting material abnormalities beneath a coated surface, comprising a mid-infrared (MIR) detection unit for illuminating an area of the coated surface and detecting light reflected from the illuminated area of the coated surface, and a processing unit for producing an image from optical characteristics received from the MIR detection unit. In addition, the system may further comprise a scanning unit for moving the MIR detection unit to a next area.

An apparatus for use in examining an object, such as skin, mucosa and cervical tissues for the purpose of detecting cancer and precancerous conditions therein. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a gun-shaped housing having a handle portion and a barrel portion. The front end of the barrel portion is open, and a glass cover is mounted therein. Red, green, blue, and white LED's are disposed within the handle portion of the housing and are electrically connected to a battery also disposed within the handle portion of the housing. A manually-operable switch for controlling actuation of each of the four LED's is accessible on the handle portion of the housing. An optical fiber is disposed inside the housing and is used to transmit light from the four LED's through a first polarizer disposed in the barrel portion of the housing and then through the glass cover to illuminate a desired object. Reflected light from the object entering the housing through the glass cover is passed through a second polarizer, which is adjustably mounted in the barrel portion of the housing and which is preferably oriented to pass depolarized light emitted from an illuminated object, and is then imaged by optics onto a CCD detector. The optics may include a lens that is disposed within the barrel portion and is adjustably spaced relative to the CCD detector. The detector is coupled to a wireless transmitter mounted in the housing, the transmitter transmitting the output from the detector to a remotely located wireless receiver. The wireless receiver is coupled to a computer, which then processes the output from the detector. The processed output is then displayed on a display. The display may be remotely situated for remote expert diagnosis.

Spectral polarizing tomographic dermatoscope

A method and apparatus for examining a cell smear for the purpose of detecting the presence of cancerous and precancerous cells located therein. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises illuminating at least a portion of the cell smear with light of a first wavelength, whereby native fluorescence is emitted therefrom. Next, the intensity of native fluorescence emitted from the illuminated area is measured at a second wavelength and at a third wavelength as a function of location within the illuminated area. The first, second and third wavelengths are chosen so that the ratio of fluorescence intensities at the second and third wavelengths is indicative of a carcinomatous condition. Next, the ratio of intensities measured at the second and third wavelengths is determined to obtain a value for each location within the illuminated area. Finally, a map is generated of all the cells present within the illuminated area using the calculated values. The map not only shows the spatial distribution of cells located within the area but also indicates by color coding or shading the carcinomatous condition of each cell therein.

A photonic paper product dispenser is provided for dispensing a portion of a roll of a paper product. The photonic paper product dispenser comprises a housing which holds the roll of the paper product. The dispenser further comprises a light source for emitting an infrared light signal and a photodetector affixed to the housing which detects infrared light from the source reflected by the user and converts the light to electrical signals. The dispenser further includes a signal processing circuit in electrical connection with the photodetector. The signal processing circuit receives and processes signals sent by the photodetector. The dispenser further includes a motor in electrical connection with said signal processing circuit. The dispenser further includes a pair of gears mechanically connected to the motor which rotate upon activation of the motor. The gears are mechanically connected to one of a pair of rollers, the roller rotating upon rotation of the gears. The pair of rollers are mounted in the housing so that they are frictionally engaged with the roll of the paper product. The roll of the paper product is fed tautly between the pair of rollers. As the roller connected to the gears rotates, the roll of the paper product will rotate causing a sheet of the paper product to advance out from the dispenser which can then be removed from the roll by the user without having to touch any part of the dispenser.

Method and apparatus for examining subcutaneous tissues inside organs of the body. The method comprises the steps of (a) providing an optic probe positioning assembly comprising a solid needle and a hollow tube, the solid needle being sheathed inside the hollow tube; (b) subcutaneously inserting the positioning assembly into a tissue sample to be examined; (c) removing the solid needle from the tissue sample, leaving the hollow tube in place in the tissue; (d) then, inserting an optic probe through the hollow tube into proximity with the tissue sample; (e) optically determining the condition of the tissue sample using the optic probe; (f) after the optically determining step, removing the optic probe from the hollow tube; (g) then, inserting a biopsy needle into the hollow tube; (h) then, excising at least a portion of the tissue sample; and (i) then, removing the biopsy needle and the excised tissue sample from the hollow tube.

Method and apparatus for in vivo examination of subcutaneous tissues

A technique for determining whether a cell is malignant as opposed to non-malignant using extrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy. The technique is premised on the principle that certain fluorescent dyes preferentially stain malignant cells as opposed to non-malignant cells. Accordingly, by exposing a cell to the fluorescent dye, irradiating the cell with light of such a wavelength as to cause the dye to fluoresce, measuring the intensity of fluorescence at a wavelength indicative of fluorescence of the dye, and comparing the fluorescence intensity to standards obtained from malignant cells and non-malignant cells, it is possible for one to accurately classify the cell as being either malignant or non-malignant. The present invention also relates to an automated system which applies the principles of the aforementioned technique to depict the spatial distribution of cells within an area of a Pap smear-type sample and to characterize each of the cells as being malignant or non-malignant.

A method for determining if tissue is malignant as opposed to non-malignant (i.e., benign tumor tissue, benign tissue, or normal tissue). In one embodiment, the method comprises irradiating a human breast tissue sample with light at a wavelength of about 310 nm and measuring the time-resolved fluorescence emitted therefrom at about 340 nm. The time-resolved fluorescence profile is then compared to similar profiles obtained from known malignant and non-malignant human breast tissues. By fitting the profiles to the formula I(t)=A.sub.1 e.sup.(-t/.tau. 1.sup.) +A.sub.2 e.sup.(-t/.tau. 2.sup.), one can quantify the differences between tissues of various conditions. For example, non-malignant human breast tissues exhibit a slow component (.tau..sub.2) which is less than 1.6 ns whereas malignant human breast tissues exhibit a slow component (.tau..sub.2) which is greater than 1.6 ns. In addition, non-malignant human breast tissues exhibit a ratio of fast to slow amplitudes (A.sub.1 /A.sub.2) which is greater than 0.85 whereas malignant human breast tissues exhibit a ratio of fast to slow amplitudes (A.sub.1 /A.sub.2) which is less than 0.6. This technique can be used with different excitation and/or emission wavelengths, and can be applied to the detection of malignancies (or other abnormal states) in tissues other than human breast tissue.

An SHG autocorrelator for use in measuring the duration of an ultrashort pulse of light includes in one embodiment a thin pellicle beamsplitter for splitting the pulse of light into first and second beams, a stationary optical delay disposed along the path of the first beam, a movable optical delay disposed along the path of the second beam, a thin SHG crystal, a concave mirror for bringing the first and second beams to focus into the SHG crystal, a photodetector for detecting light emitted from the SHG crystal, and a narrow bandpass filter in front of the photodetector for filtering out non second harmonic light. The device reduces time broadening and delay of ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond time domain.
