A cutting insert has opposing upper and lower surfaces interconnected by a peripheral side surface, an insert axis passing through the upper and lower surfaces, and first and second upper cutting edges formed at the intersection of the upper surface and the peripheral side surface. A lower central protuberance having first, second, third and fourth abutment walls extends downwardly from the lower surface. In a cross-section taken in a first horizontal plane perpendicular to the insert axis and intersecting the lower central protuberance, the first, second, third and fourth abutment walls define an imaginary quadrilateral having diagonally opposing first and third internal angles and diagonally opposing second and fourth internal angles. The first and third internal angles are equal to each other, and the second and fourth internal angles are not equal to each other. Two cutting inserts are removably secured in a rotary cutting tool.

An indexable cutting insert has opposing upper and lower end surfaces, and a peripheral surface including three side surfaces circumferentially alternating with three corner surfaces. The three side surfaces define an imaginary triangle and an imaginary hexagon. Each corner surface intersects the upper end surface to form an upper corner peripheral edge having a primary cutting edge. In a top view, each triangle side traverses two upper corner peripheral edges, imaginary lines tangential to the end points of each primary cutting edge are either collinear or form an obtuse angle greater than 175 degrees, each primary cutting edge has a primary length greater than half the hexagon side length, and at least one triangle side traverses each primary cutting edge. The insert is removably secured in a rotary cutting tool such that one of the upper corner peripheral edges contains an axially forwardmost point of the insert's upper peripheral edge.

An indexable milling or drilling insert having a 180-degree rotational symmetry about each of the first, second and third axes (X, Y, Z) of a three-dimensional euclidean space. The insert has opposite first and second main surfaces and a peripheral surface extending therebetween. Each main surface has a main abutment surface and at least two rake surfaces. The insert has a through clamping bore which extends along the third axis and opens out to the main surfaces. The peripheral surface has two opposite front surfaces connected to two opposite side surfaces. Each front surface has a pair of outward abutment surfaces and each side surface has a pair of at least partially planar inward abutment surfaces. Each pair of outward abutment surfaces converge outwardly away from the third axis and each pair of inward abutment surfaces converge inwardly towards the third axis.

An indexable cutting insert has opposing upper and lower end surfaces, and a peripheral surface including three side surfaces and three corner surfaces. Each corner surface intersects the upper end surface to form an upper cutting edge, and each side surface has a locating surface. The lower end surface has three radially outward facing lower abutment surfaces. The three locating surfaces define a first imaginary triangle having three first bisector planes and three locating planes, and the three lower abutment surfaces define a second imaginary triangle having three second bisector planes. None of the first and second bisector planes are coplanar, and each locating plane intersects two of the upper cutting edges. For each index position of the cutting insert in an insert receiving pocket of a cutting tool, one of the locating surfaces and one of the lower abutment surfaces is in contact with pocket walls thereof.

A cutting insert for retention in a rotating cutting tool having an axis of rotation has two opposing end surfaces and a peripheral surface extending therebetween, each end surface having a mutual first axis of symmetry passing through the end surfaces about which each end surface has N-fold rotational symmetry for some value of N where N is chosen from the group consisting of 2, 3 and 4. A peripheral cutting edge is formed at the junction between each end surface and the peripheral surface, the peripheral cutting edge having N curved cutting edges merging with N straight cutting edges which extend between the curved cutting edges at extremities thereof. The curved cutting edges of the two end surfaces are not aligned in an end view of the cutting insert along the first axis of symmetry.

A milling cutter includes a cutter body and at least three circumferentially spaced insert pockets, axially offset one with respect to the other, each having a replaceable cutting insert secured thereto. Each cutting insert has at least two identical straight serrated cutting edges and all the cutting inserts are identical. A first insert pocket () is an axially forwardmost insert pocket. A second insert pocket is axially offset from the first insert pocket by a first offset distance that is smaller than an offset distance associated with any other pair of axially adjacent insert pockets.

A cutting insert for mounting in a socket on an insert holder of a milling cutter. The cutting insert has opposing top and bottom surfaces and a peripheral surface extending therebetween, forming one or two cutting edges. The protuberance is located in the socket. The socket includes a first socket side abutment surface for providing primarily axial support for the cutting insert against cutting forces acting in an axial rearward direction during a milling operation.

A cutting insert has a trigonal shape. The cutting insert has a peripheral surface that extends between two opposing identical end surfaces. A median plane (M) bisects the cutting insert between the end surfaces. A through bore extends between the end surfaces. A cutting edge, formed at the intersection of each end surface with the peripheral surface, is divided into three identical cutting sections. Each cutting section is located between two vertexes of the trigonal shape. Each cutting section has a convex primary cutting edge and a concave secondary cutting edge that merge together. An insert tangential abutment surface is located between the cutting edge and the through bore. A primary relief surface forms an insert internal obtuse angle with a first reference plane (P). A secondary relief surface forms an insert internal acute angle with a second reference plane (P).

Cutting insert

A cutting tool has at least one insert receiving pocket with a cutting insert retained therein. The insert receiving pocket has a base wall and a side wall transversely directed to the base wall with a circular recess having a peripheral wall extending downwardly from the base wall. A threaded bore extends downwardly from the lower wall of the recess. The cutting insert has an upper surface, a lower surface and a cylindrical protrusion having peripheral surface extending downwardly from the lower surface. A through bore extends through the cutting insert from the upper surface. A retaining screw passes through the through bore and threadingly engages the threaded bore with the peripheral surface abutting the peripheral wall and with the lower surface abutting the base wall.

A cutting insert holder has a lower clamping jaw resiliently connected to an upper clamping jaw. The upper clamping jaw is provided with two elongated spaced apart parallel grooves. The cutting insert is retained in the cutting insert holder by means of a screw which passes through a through bore in the upper jaw of the insert holder, through a through bore in the cutting insert and is threadingly engaged into a threaded bore in the lower clamping jaw. The two elongated ridges in the upper surface of the cutting insert cooperate with the two elongated parallel grooves in the lower surface of the upper clamping jaw.

Cutting tool

The present invention provides a cutting tool assembly comprising a tool shank a pull rod and a cutting head. The tool shank has an axially extending elongated hole. A forward portion of the elongated hole being formed by first and second non-coaxial, partially overlapping, axially extending cylindrical bores. The pull rod has forward coupling portion that cooperates with a rear-coupling portion of the cutting head, forming a joint coupling region. The pull rod and the rear-coupling portion of the cutting head are retained in the elongated hole in the tool shank with the joint coupling region situated in the forward portion of the elongated.

Modular cutting tool assembly

A cutting insert for mounting in a cutting tool, comprises a cutting head portion with a substantially arcuate cutting edge and a substantially trapezoidal mounting body portion integrally formed therewith. The mounting body portion has substantially planar upper and lower surfaces and substantially straight side surfaces converging in the direction away from the cutting head portion. The entire cutting edge of the cutting head portion lies on a sphere and defines an arc substantially less than 90.degree., the cutting head portion having an imaginary chordal plane passing through peripheral ends of the arc. The side surfaces of the mounting body portion are directed substantially radially with respect to a center of the sphere and are substantially shorter than the length of the chordal plane.
