An interface plate for operably coupling a vehicle component to a chassis of the vehicle may include a first surface adapted to be operably coupled to an actuator housing, a second surface adapted to be operably coupled to the chassis, and a vibration reduction assembly to reduce vibration propagation between the actuator housing and the chassis. The vibration reduction assembly may include a first retaining channel disposed in the first surface, and a first wire rope disposed within the first retaining channel.

Wire rope vibration damping

A method and system for increasing dampening capacity utilizing dry friction between individual wires of a rope embedded in a molded component formed from a composite. The individual wires allow inter-wire friction to occur during part vibration. The amount of inter-wire friction is controlled by the pressure when the component is molded. The component includes a body that is a molded matrix formed form a composite material. The body may be of any material selected from the group consisting of a polymer, a metal or a ceramic material. One or more vibration-dampening ropes are embedded in the body. The vibration-dampening ropes may be elongated segments or may be a rope having connected ends that form one or more rings. The vibration-dampening rope includes at least outer wires and can further include a plurality of inner wires surrounded by the outer wires. Composite material is prevented from passing through the outer wires, thereby forming voids between the wires.

Composite materials having embedded metal cables or ropes for increased dampening capacity and methods of manufacturing same

A friction damped insert for highly stressed engineering components is disclosed. The disclosed inventive concept provides a method and system for increasing the damping capacity of an engineering system by adding a non-flat solid, highly damped insert to a system component that contributes most to the system's dynamic response. The insert can either be embedded into a system component during casting or be fastened to the system component outer surface. The insert is made of the single layer of flexible material by forming it into a rigid elongated body. The layer of material can be turned over on itself without folding to create a cylinder or can be folded over a number of times to create a prismatic bar. The layer of material may be shaped into a corrugated panel. The layer of flexible material may have a number of relatively small openings or perforations with a uniform spatial distribution.

Friction damped insert for highly stressed engineering components

A brake pad for a motor vehicle is provided. The brake pad includes a body having an upper edge and a lower edge. The upper edge is configured for positioning relative to an outer diameter of a rotor. The brake pad also includes a friction surface extending between the upper edge and the lower edge for engaging the rotor. The brake pad further includes a relieved portion located along a section of the upper edge. The relieved portion is configured to reduce squeal noise caused by tangential modes of the rotor, during engagement of the brake pad with the rotor, by minimizing contact between the friction surface of the brake pad and the outer diameter of the rotor at an area of the rotor having a potential for high modal displacement in a tangential direction.

A brake pad retracting device is disclosed. An example vehicle braking system comprising a rotor, and a caliper including a brake pad slidably engaged with a guide pin, and a coil spring through which the guide pin extends, the coil spring having a first end and a second end, the first end having a first inner diameter sized to enable the first end to move freely over a surface of the guide pin, the first end to engage the brake pad to urge the brake pad away from the rotor, and the second end having a second inner diameter sized to frictionally engage the surface of the guide pin, the first inner diameter greater than the second inner diameter.

Friction damped component for highly stress engineering components

A method and system for increasing damping capacity in a mechanical fastener by utilizing dry friction between individual wires of a sheathed rope is disclosed. For metal fasteners, the sheathed rope is inserted loosely into a thick-walled metal tube. The tube is then rolled to reduce the tube diameter, thereby uniformly embedding the rope into the tube material. The tube is then subjected to either cold or hot forming. After forming, the fastener blank may be threaded. For composite or plastic fasteners, the sheathed rope includes insert locators attached to the sheathing. The sheathed rope having the insert locators is placed in the mold cavity prior to the polymerizable material being injected into the mold. Regardless of the embodiment, the resulting fastener has increased damping due to the dry inter-wire friction within the embedded rope which develops between the surfaces of individual wires upon dynamic loading of a fastened joint.

A plate assembly for a motor vehicle may include a first plate, a second arranged substantially parallel to the first plate, the second plate defining a plurality of perforations, and a mesh core including a plurality of wire bundles, the core arranged between the plates, wherein the mesh core is rigidly joined to an inner surface of each plate via the perforations.

Composite materials having embedded metal ropes for increased damping capacity and methods of manufacturing same

A brake pad for a motor vehicle is provided. The brake pad includes a body having upper and lower edges and a friction surface extending between the upper and lower edges for engaging a rotor. A notch is located along a section of the upper edge of the brake pad. The notch has an arc length of about &#xbc; to about &#xbd; of an arc length of the pad and a depth of about &#x215b; to about &#x2159; of a height of the pad. During engagement with the rotor, the notch is configured to reduce squeal noise caused by tangential modes of the rotor.

An elastomeric bushing for vehicle suspension includes inner and outer metal tubes, an elastomeric material between the tubes, and one or more bundles of woven wires (ropes or cables) in entangled or mesh form wherein at least a portion of the wires contact at least one of the tubes. The bushing has enhanced thermal conductivity via metal-to-metal contact and improved damping capacity to reduce heat buildup inside the material upon cyclic loading and unloading. The metallic wire rope, metallic wire ropes or wire mesh are embedded in the elastomeric material during injection molding where the ends of the wire ropes are attached to the opposing side walls of the inner and outer metal tubes or are spaced apart from the opposing side walls for tunability and to thereby enable a more effective dissipation of the heat generated inside the elastomeric bushing during its usage into the kinematically connected suspension members.

Elastomeric bushing having embedded structures for improved thermal conductivity and damping capacity

A friction damping cast component and method of production are disclosed. The components may be rotary, such as a cast brake rotor, or may be non-rotary, such as a cast suspension part or a cast engine block. Regardless of the type of component, a two-part vibration-damping insert having a thin metal core and a thin metal sheath is provided. The sheath fully encompasses the core in such a way that a dry sliding friction contact develops at their interfaces. The outer surface of the sheath with the metal core inside is rigidly bonded to the cast material that surrounds it during the casting process. The sheath surfaces may have a number of openings that allow a limited infiltration of molten cast iron material just inside the immediate vicinity of the sheath openings for spot rigid bonding between the surrounding cast material and the insert surfaces during casting.

Coulomb friction damped components and method for manufacturing same

A brake component may include a body and at least one sheathed cable positioned within the body. The at least one sheathed cable may include a plurality of wires, each of the plurality of wires having a surface in sliding contact with a surface of at least one adjacent wire of the plurality of wires. During braking of the motor vehicle, relative sliding movement between the surfaces of the plurality of wires may dampen a resonant vibration of the component.
