An electro-optic element having multiple regions is disclosed. The electro-optic element comprises an electro-optic medium disposed between two electrodes. Further, the electro-optic medium is operable between activated and un-activated states based, at least in part, on exposure to an electrical potential. In some embodiments, in response to an electrical potential of a first polarity, the electro-optic medium may be substantially activated in one region and substantially un-activated in another region. In response to an electrical potential of a second polarity opposite the first polarity, the electro-optic medium may be substantially activated in both regions. In other embodiments, the electro-optic medium is operably activated such that electro-optic medium is activated in one region and un-activated in another region, regardless of polarity.

Multi-region electro-optic element

The principles of the present invention further provide both a shaped metal container and its preforms that exhibit a rounded grain structure characteristic created by an annealing process and a method for making a shaped metal container. The process of making said metal container results in a quicker process time and uses less metals (at least 10% metal weight savings), thus allowing for a decrease in the costs of making such shaped metal containers. A shaped metal container may include work hardened rolled sheet-metal defining a sidewall, an opening, and a base, where at least one section along the sidewall has grains with an average aspect ratio less than about 4 to 1.

Disclosed are a process and apparatus for polishing a glass article (). The polishing process comprises bringing a rotating article () to be polished into contact with various centrifugally outspread flexible flaps of a rotating flexible flap grinding wheel (), with a grinding wheel () rotation shaft being parallel to an article () rotation shaft; and pneumatically controlling the feed of the flexible flap grinding wheel () relative to the surface of the article () to be polished, such that the outer edges of the flaps of the flexible flap grinding wheel () are in pressure contact with the surface to be polished of the article () to be polished, and polishing same. This polishing process can restore a worn glass bottle, particularly a glass bottle having a profiled contour, to the extent that same looks like new at a lower cost. The fiber optic pressure sensing system includes a sensor housing formed using MEMS processing. The sensor housing has ribs and grooves in both horizontal and vertical directions relative to the surface to allow the membrane to flex in a consistent manner. The flexing of the membrane allows the pedestal to be repeatedly positioned in response to pressure acting on the extension of the sensor head and membrane.

A fiber optic pressure catheter includes a light source, an optical fiber coupled to receive light from the light source and a sensor head that is optically coupled to the optical fiber. The sensor head has a housing defining a chamber coupled to an end of the optical fiber opposite the light source. The housing has an opening which is enclosed by a membrane. The membrane is responsive to pressure differentials between the chamber and outside the sensor head. A resilient ribbon is coupled within the chamber and has a first end fixedly coupled to a support. The ribbon has a second end that is movable in front of the optical fiber. The ribbon is mounted so that the middle portion of the ribbon touches the membrane and is biased by the membrane in response to various pressure differentials. Thus, various amounts of light are reflected back into the optical fiber based on the amount of pressure at the membrane. A detection system is optically coupled to the optical fiber which determines the pressure at the sensor head from the contrast of spectral fringes of light created by an optical coating on the end of the optical fiber and the light reflecting from the ribbon.
