An exhaust gas treatment system including a hydrocarbon storage model; and a controller operably connected to the hydrocarbon storage model, the controller configured to execute a method for determining a hydrocarbon storage level of a hydrocarbon trap, the method comprising determining a first reaction rate representing a rate of hydrocarbon adsorption at non-acidic sites of the hydrocarbon trap; determining a second reaction rate representing a rate of hydrocarbon desorption at non-acidic sites of the hydrocarbon trap; determining a third reaction rate representing a rate of hydrocarbon adsorption at acidic sites of the hydrocarbon trap; determining a fourth reaction rate representing a rate of hydrocarbon desorption at acidic sites of the hydrocarbon trap; and determining the hydrocarbon storage level in the hydrocarbon trap based on the first reaction rate, the second reaction rate, the third reaction rate, and the fourth reaction rate.

An exhaust gas treatment system including: an internal combustion engine comprising an exhaust gas outlet; a first three way catalyst downstream of the exhaust gas outlet, wherein the first three way catalyst receives an exhaust output from the exhaust gas outlet; a hydrocarbon trap downstream of the first three way catalyst, wherein the hydrocarbon trap receives an exhaust output from the first three way catalyst; an exhaust heating unit downstream of the hydrocarbon trap, wherein the exhaust heating unit receives an exhaust output from the hydrocarbon trap; and a second three way catalyst downstream of the exhaust heating unit, wherein the second three way catalyst receives an exhaust output from the heating unit, wherein an air injection port is configured to selectively deliver a stream of air upstream of the hydrocarbon trap and downstream of the first three way catalyst.

Exhaust gas treatment system for controlling hydrocarbon adsorption/desorption in hydrocarbon trap

A layered catalyst structure for purifying an exhaust gas stream includes a catalyst support and a rhodium catalyst layer including an atomic dispersion of rhodium ions and/or rhodium atoms adsorbed on an exterior surface of the catalyst support. The catalyst support includes an alumina substrate, a first ceria layer disposed on and extending substantially continuously over the alumina substrate, and a second colloidal ceria layer formed directly on the first ceria layer over the alumina substrate.

Rhodium-containing layered catalyst structures and methods of making the same

An exhaust system includes a light-off catalyst, an exhaust system component, and at least one HO trap. The exhaust system component is upstream from the light-off catalyst and includes catalyst material, the catalyst material configured to store hydrocarbons during a period when the light-off catalyst is warming up to a light-off temperature. The at least one HO trap is at or upstream from the exhaust system component and is configured to perform HO adsorption and desorption to increase a length of time for the exhaust system component to reach a hydrocarbon release temperature and prevent the exhaust system component from reaching the hydrocarbon release temperature prior to the light-off catalyst reaching the light-off temperature.

Hydrocarbon adsorption and desorption control in vehicle exhaust systems using HO traps

A three-way catalyst for reduced palladium loading is provided. The catalyst includes an inert substrate and a palladium catalyst material coating the substrate. The palladium catalyst material includes a support material formed from one of 10% CeO/AlO, 20% CeO&#x2014;AlO(20CeAlOy), 30% CeO&#x2014;AlO(30CeAlOy), AlO, and MOx-AlO, wherein M is one of copper, iron, manganese, titanium, zirconium, magnesium, strontium, and barium. The palladium catalyst material includes a layer of CeOmaterial disposed upon the support material, wherein the layer of CeOmaterial is dispersed on a surface of the support material. The palladium catalyst material includes an active component including a layer of praseodymium oxide particles dispersed across the surface of the layer of CeOmaterial and a layer of palladium particles disposed upon and dispersed across the surface of the layer of CeOmaterial at locations each corresponding to a respective location of each of the praseodymium particles.

Three-way catalyst with reduced palladium loading and method of making the three-way catalyst

The catalyst support includes an alumina substrate, a first ceria layer disposed on and extending substantially continuously over the alumina substrate, and a second colloidal ceria layer formed directly on the first ceria layer over the alumina substrate. The palladium catalyst layer is formed on the exterior surface of the catalyst support by applying a palladium-containing precursor solution to the exterior surface of the catalyst support and then heating the catalyst support and the palladium-containing precursor solution. The palladium-containing precursor solution includes a positively charged palladium complex in an aqueous medium and has a pH greater than a point of zero charge of the second colloidal ceria layer.
