A porous composite includes a porous base material, and a porous collection layer provided on a collection surface of the base material (e.g., on inner surfaces of first cells). The collection layer contains catalyst particles of rare-earth oxide or transition-metal oxide situated in pores of the collection surface of the base material. The collection surface has a covered region that is covered with the collection layer and whose total area is 60% or less of the total area of the collection surface.

When the porous ceramic structure contains Co together with Fe or Mn, the Co content is higher than or equal to 0.1 mass % and lower than or equal to 3.0 mass % in terms of CoO, and when the porous ceramic structure contains Co without containing Fe and Mn, the Co content is higher than or equal to 0.2 mass % and lower than or equal to 6.0 mass % in terms of CoO. A porous ceramic structure includes a porous honeycomb structure composed primarily of cordierite, and Ce- and Zr-containing particles fixedly attached to the honeycomb structure. The Ce- and Zr-containing particles contain Ce and Zr. The Ce- and Zr-containing particles have a fixedly attached portion located inside the honeycomb structure and a protrusion contiguous with the fixedly attached portion and protruding from the honeycomb structure.

The binding material binds the aggregate particles together in a state where pores are provided therein. The porous material contains at least one of copper, calcium, and nickel as an ancillary component.

A porous ceramic structure with low pressure loss and high catalytic performance is provided. A porous material includes an aggregate, and a binding material that binds the aggregate together in a state where pores are formed. The porous material contains 0.1 to 10.0 mass % of an MgO component, 0.5 to 25.0 mass % of an AlOcomponent, and 5.0 to 45.0 mass % of an SiOcomponent with respect to the mass of the whole porous material, and further contains 0.01 to 5.5 mass % of an Sr component in terms of SrO.

A porous composite includes a porous base material and a porous collection layer formed on the base material. The collection layer has a thickness greater than or equal to 6 &#x3bc;m. The collection layer has a plurality of large pores, each exposing the surface of the base material. A sum of areas of exposed regions of the base material that are each exposed from each large pore of the plurality of large pores is greater than or equal to 1% of the total area of the collection layer and less than or equal to 30% thereof. This allows the porous composite to achieve a favorable efficiency of collecting particulate matter and to increase the accessible area between the particulate matter and the collection layer and thereby accelerate oxidation of the particulate matter collected by the porous composite.

The oxide films that exist between the particle bodies and the binding material have a thickness less than or equal to 0.90 &#x3bc;m.
