An example near-field charging system includes a housing that includes a charging surface and at least one other surface, a radiating antenna, and a non-radiating element positioned above the radiating antenna within the housing such that the non-radiating element is closer to the charging surface than the radiating antenna. The radiating antenna produces a first electromagnetic-field distribution that is received by a receiver, the first electromagnetic-field provides usable power when the receiver is placed at any position on a first portion of the charging surface. The non-radiating element changes a distribution characteristic of the first electromagnetic-field distribution to produce a second electromagnetic-field distribution, the second electromagnetic-field distribution providing usable power to the receiver when the receiver is placed at any position across a second portion of the charging surface of the housing, and the second portion is at least 10% percent greater than the first portion.

Wireless-power transmitting device for creating a uniform near-field charging area

A charging pad for transmitting wireless power waves for charging an electronic device is disclosed. The charging pad includes transmitting antenna elements that are configured to be selectively activated to transmit wireless power waves to the electronic device for wireless charging. The charging pad includes a charging surface including a guiding contour that aligns a position of the electronic device on the charging surface such that a transmitting antenna element is within a predetermined distance of the electronic device and has a predetermined coupling efficiency. The charging pad further includes a transmitter controller integrated circuit (IC). The transmitter controller IC is configured to detect the position of the electronic device on the charging surface and selectively activate at least one transmitting antenna element based on a determination that the at least one transmitting antenna element is within the predetermined distance of the electronic device and has the predetermined coupling efficiency.

Methods and devices for surveying for active and inactive power receivers within a wireless-power coverage area are described. A method includes causing performance of a survey looking for active power receivers within a wireless-power coverage area using communication radio(s). Information is received from an active power receiver and transmission of RF signals is caused to energize inactive power receivers using a power-transmission antenna. A first RF signal is transmitted using a first value for a transmission characteristic, and a second RF signal is transmitted using a second value for the transmission characteristic. Additional information is received from a first energized power receiver and further information from a second energized power receiver. Two or more frequency bands are identified for radio-frequency wireless-power transmissions by a wireless-power transmitting device within the wireless-power coverage area based on the information, the additional information, and the further information.

A wireless power receiving system includes two or more electrically small antenna arms and a common antenna ground. The two or more electrically small antenna arms are connected to the same common antenna ground and are close enough to one another to be strongly coupled. In some embodiments, the two or more electrically small antenna arms are tuned to the same functional frequency so that they load one another to create self-resonance. The wireless power receiving system receives the transmitted wireless power wave emitting from a wireless power transmitter without added lossy matching components.

Systems and methods for miniaturized antenna for wireless power transmissions

An example system charges an electronic device using wirelessly transmitted radio-frequency power (RF) waves. The system includes the electronic device with one or more movable arms. At least one movable arm includes a receiving antenna element. The system further includes a charging pad that includes a housing. The housing includes at least one guiding contour on a surface that is configured for align a position of the electronic device on the surface of the housing. The charging pad further includes transmitting antenna elements that are selectively activated to transmit radio-frequency power waves to the receiving antenna element of the electronic device. The system also includes a transmitter controller integrated circuit (IC) configured to selectively activate a respective transmitting antenna element of the transmitting antenna elements. Activating the respective transmitting antenna element causes transmission of the radio-frequency power waves to the receiving antenna element of the electronic device.

The various embodiments described herein include methods, devices, and systems for wireless power transmission. In one aspect, a wireless power transmission system includes an antenna component configured to transmit and/or receive electromagnetic waves, such as power waves, the antenna component having at least two conductive plates positioned on a same plane, where: (1) the at least two conductive plates form a monopole antenna configured to transmit and/or receive electromagnetic waves in a first frequency range, (2) the at least two conductive plates are positioned such that a gap exists between the at least two conductive plates, thereby forming a capacitor, and (3) the at least two conductive plates and the gap form a loop antenna configured to transmit and/or receive electromagnetic waves in a second frequency range.
