A display apparatus and a brightness adjusting method thereof are provided. The display apparatus includes a panel unit which displays an image signal, a backlight unit which provides a light to the panel unit to visualize the image signal, a luminance value regulator which calculates representative values to be applied for adjusting a brightness of a plurality of partial areas of the backlight unit corresponding to the input image signal, a contrast enhancer which compensates for a brightness of the image signal compromised by the representative value through a contrast enhancement, and a pixel value compensator which compensates for pixel values of the image signal compensated using the contrast enhancement. Accordingly, the contrast ratio of the entire image can be enhanced by compensating for the brightness loss of the image signal caused from the brightness adjustment of the luminous element, and the image quality can be more finely improved.

A display apparatus and a backlight scanning method thereof are provided. The display apparatus having a backlight illuminator includes a parameter generator for generating parameters indicative of motion features of a video signal; and a backlight driver for driving the backlight illuminator by generating a scanning signal which has a plurality of scanning pulses during a frame period and is adjusted according to the parameters generated at the parameter generator. A display apparatus and a method for adjusting brightness thereof are provided. The display apparatus includes a panel unit which displays a video signal, a light emitting unit which provides the panel unit with a ray of light and causes the video signal to be visualized, a light emission control unit which controls the light emitting unit so that the ray of light is provided to each of local areas of the panel unit, and a panel control unit which compensates pixels of the video signal in each of local areas, to remove an artifact which is generated due to the ray of light provided to local areas of the panel unit. The present invention relates to a display apparatus comprising a light emitting element supplying light, and a switch to switch on and off power, which is supplied to the light emitting element. A comparing unit compares a predetermined first reference voltage and an output voltage which is proportional to a current applied to the light emitting element. A contrast compensation apparatus and a method thereof utilize a simplified hardware structure and a low contrast distortion. The contrast compensation apparatus includes a pixel value detection unit to detect a distribution of pixel values of respective pixels of an input image signal, a pixel value limit unit having pre-set luminance limit values and re-configuring the distribution of the pixel values of the respective pixels based on the pre-set luminance limit values, and a mapping unit to set luminance for the respective pixels based on a cumulative distribution function with respect to the re-configured pixel values. When certain portions of an image are rendered very bright or dark, the phenomenon in which the entire image becomes abruptly bright or dark is reduced. Further, the contrast compensation apparatus uses the minimum number of multipliers, adders, and subtractors only, thus having an advantage of simplified structure and using less electric power.

A display apparatus and method in which a current ripple is decreased to improve characteristics of a display apparatus are provided. A 3-dimensional image is generated from an input 2-dimensional image based upon illuminative characteristics of the input image by filtering the 2-dimensional input image with filters of different orientations, outputting base shading images corresponding to the filters, extracting positive pixel values for each base shading image, calculating a difference between the pixel values of the input image and the extracted positive pixel values, calculating a median value of the calculated difference, selecting the filter to output a base shading image of smallest median, outputting a shading image by filtering the input image with the selected filter, combining the input image with the shading image and outputting the 3-dimensional image based upon the combined image. A previously selected filter for a preceding image can be considered when selecting a filter for a current image, enabling generation of 3-dimensional moving pictures.
