A portable electronic device may adjust a display orientation of a display screen of the portable electronic device according to data from a gravity sensor, a video camera, and a display orientation adjusting unit. The display orientation adjusting unit may analyze acceleration data of the portable electronic device to generate a first adjustment parameter, and analyze the facial image to generate a second adjustment parameter. Furthermore, the display orientation adjusting unit may determine whether the display orientation of the display screen needs to be adjusted, and adjust the display orientation of the display screen to a viewing orientation of the user according to the first adjustment parameter or the second adjustment parameter.

Portable electronic device and method for adjusting display orientation of the portable electronic device

Automatically installing a software application and automatically removing and releasing resources used by the application is disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, the computerized system includes an operating system for controlling and maintaining resources on a computer; and an event monitor. The event monitor invokes an autorun program in response to a signal from the operating system that a computer-readable medium has been inserted into the computer. The event monitor also invokes the autorun program upon receipt of a signal that the computer readable medium has been removed from the computer. The autorun program installs an application from the computer readable medium when the medium is inserted and releases resources acquired by the application when the medium is removed.

Rotating image data ninety degrees is disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, the computerized system includes an operating system providing a graphics interface library, and a graphics interface buffer maintained by the graphics interface library. The graphics interface buffer contains image data comprising a first screen image. The system also includes a graphics device driver that implements a method to rotate an area within the image data by dividing the area into a plurality of square pixel regions, rotating each of the squares, and writing the squares to an image data buffer comprising a display buffer maintained by the graphics device driver.

A system and method for sorting accented character strings involves creating an expanded character string containing the characters in their base form (without accents) and corresponding ordinal values indicating whether the base characters are accented or unaccented. The ordinal values are assigned in a manner that differentiates accented from unaccented characters as well as one type of accented character from another. The expanded character strings are then sorted, first according to their base characters and then according to their ordinal values.

A method for calibrating a touch panel display includes generating contact coordinates (x.sub.i, y.sub.i,i=1, . . . , N) indicative of N touch points of contact on the touch panel display, where N&gt;3. The touch points can be selected at random on the touch panel, and are not constrained to specific, predefined locations. The contact coordinates (x.sub.i, y.sub.i) are related into screen coordinates (x.sub.i, y.sub.i,) according to the following mapping transformation: ##EQU1## This mapping transformation accounts for all possible two-dimensional transformations including transposition, rotation, and shearing. After N sets of digitizer and screen coordinates are found, values for the parameters a.sub.1, b.sub.1, c.sub.1, a.sub.2, b.sub.2, and c.sub.2 are derived. Preferably, the parameters are determined using an optimizing algorithm, such as a least square fitting algorithm. The parameters a.sub.1, b.sub.1, c.sub.1, a.sub.2, b.sub.2, and c.sub.2 are stored and thereafter used for all mapping transformations.

Method for calibrating touch panel displays

An apparatus and method for navigating through an application program on a computer coupled to a computer-controlled display screen. The user can control the cursor position on the computer-controlled display using simple controls. The invention may use a hand-held controller with a four direction control button and a function select button. The computer accepts the direction input information and moves the cursor or focus according to one of three different navigation functions. The first two navigation functions are selected by the application program, and may change from one navigation to another in different portions of the program or under user control. With the first navigation function, the direction buttons on the controller shift the focus from one hot spot to another hot spot in the selected direction using predefined criteria. With the second navigation function, the focus is shifted from a present position on the computer-controlled display to the adjacent position in the selected direction. If the function select button is depressed while the focus is on a hot spot, the function associated with that particular hot spot are enabled. A third navigation function is enabled if the function select button and the directional control button are both depressed. With the third navigational function, the focus moves from the current position in any direction selected by the directional control button. The focus movement may simultaneously occur in two dimensions using any of the navigational functions if the user selects directions in two dimensions on the four directional control button.
