An article for the storage of food products, the body of the article comprising multilayers of different thermoplastic resins which together provide excellent water vapor and gas barrier properties to preserve the food product while in its packaged state. The article contains at least one skin layer, one barrier layer, and a tie layer interposed between each skin layer and the barrier layer. The tie layer contains a graft copolymer formed from a polymerizable mixture comprising a monomer mixture and a preformed polymer which is capable of imbibing the monomer mixture. The preformed polymer is allowed to contact the monomer mixture for a length of time and at a temperature such that enough of the monomer mixture is imbibed therein, and then the polymerizable mixture is polymerized.

A polymeric blend composition comprising a vinylidene chloride interpolymer, a copolymer of a monovinylidene aromatic monomer and methyl methacrylate, and, optionally, a polymer formed from one or more monovinylidene aromatic monomers. The specification discloses a method for forming a rubber concentrate which can be incorporated in relatively high percentages into rubber reinforced polymers without adversely affecting processability. A rigid polymer forming monomer system is polymerized in the presence of a mixture of a low molecular weight rubber (weight average molecular weight of from about 2,000 to about 50,000) and a higher molecular weight rubber (weight average molecular weight of from about 100,000 to about 400,000). The resulting rubber concentrate can be incorporated into a rigid polymer blend which is compatible with the rigid polymer forming monomer phase of the rubber concentrate. The resulting new composition has significantly improved impact strength and acceptable processability.

Improved combinations of gloss and toughness are obtained in rubber-modified, impact-resistant monovinylidene aromatic polymer compositions when mass-produced particles consisting of a blend of polybutadiene with a block copolymer rubber are dispersed therein. A method for controlling the regeneration (desorbtion) of an absorbent material, i.e., an adsorbent bead or particle, for hydrocarbon vapors vented from confined spaces during periods of liquid fluctuations in the confined zone or for hydrocarbon vapors vented from within said zone which vapors are deliberately generated, or as a result of heating and cooling the confined spaces as a result of exposure to atmospheric temperature fluctuations of the confined space. The method is accomplished by providing a bed of absorbent material for said vapors in vapor communication with the vent of the confined space(s) as well as in communication with the opposite end of the fluid path through said bed to the ambient atmosphere, providing a pair of thermocouples and associated control mechanisms, one thermocouple at each end of said bed, and a valve controllable by each associated control mechanism for controlling the delivery of steam to the ambient atmosphere side of the bed, one thermocouple being calibrated to cause its associated control mechanism to open the valve controlling the steam to heat the air entering the bed from the ambient atmosphere when air is required to pass through the bed from the ambient atmosphere, the other thermocouple being calibrated to override the first thermocouple to control the steam valve when the temperature of the air and desorbed vapors reaches a predetermined temperature-the entire control system being inactive when no air or vapor is flowing.

Valuable alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons are produced from a tar comprising that fraction of an alkylation reaction product distilling above about 240.degree. C by a method comprising contacting the tar with benzene and/or toluene in the presence of a catalytic amount of a crystalline aluminosilicate molecular sieve catalyst. For example, tar obtained from the alkylation product resulting from alkylating benzene with ethylene in the presence of aluminum chloride, the tar comprising that fraction of the alkylation reaction product distilling above about 240.degree. C, is converted to a reaction product comprising valuable mono- and diethylbenzene by contacting the tar with benzene in the presence of a catalytic amount of a rare earth exchange zeolite Y molecular sieve at a temperature of at least about 240.degree. C and at a pressure of at least about 200 psi.
