A magnetic write head having a write pole and a trailing, wrap-around magnetic shield formed over the write pole and separated from the write pole by a non-magnetic trailing gap layer and non-magnetic side gap layers. The write head includes a remnant magnetic seed layer, that while being used to facilitate electroplating of the magnetic shield, is left intentionally extending beyond the back edge of the magnetic shield. This extended portion of the magnetic seed layer acts as a shunt for magnetic flux and prevents data erasure due to over-writing.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole having a trapezoidal cross-section at a media-facing surface thereof and a flared shape with a greater width in a cross-track direction at positions away from the media-facing surface, a leading shield positioned near a leading side of the main pole, wherein a leading gap is provided between the main pole and the leading shield, side shields positioned on both sides of the main pole in the cross-track direction adjacent the media-facing surface of the main pole, with side gaps provided between the main pole and both of the side shields, and a trailing gap provided on a trailing side of the main pole at the media-facing surface thereof, with a throat height of the side shields being less than the throat height of the side shields at a position closer to the trailing gap than the leading gap.

The application discloses a magnetic pole assembly having a pole tip arranged in a magnetic flux path and side shields separated from the pole tip by non-magnetic gap regions. The side shields are shaped to provide a differential shielding effect alongside the pole tip. As described, the sides shields are shaped to provide a non-magnetic gap region having a width that increases in the downtrack direction along a length of the pole tip. The increasing non-magnetic gap region alongside the pole tip provides a smaller non-magnetic gap region separating the pole tip from the side shields at the leading edge than the non-magnetic gap region separating the pole tip from the side shields at the trailing edge of the pole tip.

A write head for use in a magnetic disk drive and methods of manufacturing the same. When a non-magnetic reactive ion etching (RIE) stop layer is used in a damascene main pole fabrication process, the leading edge shield and the side shield have a magnetic separation. By replacing a non-magnetic RIE stop layer with a magnetic RIE stop layer, no removal of the RIE stop layer around the main pole is necessary. Additionally, the leading edge shield and the side shield will magnetically join together without extra processing as there will be no magnetic separation between the leading edge shield and the side shield.

A pole tip shield for a write element of a recording head is disclosed. The pole tip shield is spaced from the pole tip in the leading edge direction to provide a magnetic wall angle to reduce ATI or adjacent track erasure to compensate for the skew angle of the head. In illustrated embodiments, the pole tip shield includes side portions. In illustrated embodiments the pole tip shield is generally 'U' shaped and side portions of the pole tip shield include different thickness or width dimensions. In illustrated embodiments, the pole tip shield provides a magnetic wall angle for a rectangular shaped pole tip. Embodiments disclosed in the application include a trailing edge shield separated from the pole tip shield along an air bearing surface of the head by a non-magnetic gap portion.

A transducing head has a main pole and at least one magnetic element (such as a return pole or a shield) which provides a potential return path for a magnetic field produced by the main pole. The magnetic element is spaced from the main pole. The magnetic element has a first edge closest to the main pole and a second edge furthest from the main pole. Permeability of the magnetic element increases from the first edge to the second edge.

A transducing head has a main pole and at least one magnetic element (such as a return pole or a shield) which provides a potential return path for a magnetic field produced by the main pole. The magnetic element is spaced from the main pole. The magnetic element is formed at least in part of a magnetic material having a material property that reduces side writing at the magnetic element.

A magnetic recording head has an air bearing surface and a magnetic core having a height and a width. The magnetic core is formed in part of a plurality of narrow slices having a plurality of insulating channels interspersed therein along the width of the magnetic core. Each of the plurality of narrow slices extends essentially along the height of the magnetic core.

A magnetic recording head has a top pole, a write gap layer, a shared pole, and conductive coils. The shared pole has an air bearing surface, a top surface substantially normal to the air bearing surface, and a recess in the top surface extending across the top surface parallel to the air bearing surface. The shared pole is separated from the top pole at the air bearing surface by the write gap layer, and directly contacts the top pole at a region of the writer distal from the air bearing surface. Wrapped around the top pole are the conductive coils, a portion of which is positioned in the recess of the shared pole between the top pole and the shared pole.

A magnetic transducing head having an air bearing surface has a bottom shield, a shared pole, a read element, a substantially planar composite top pole; and a conductive coil. The read element is positioned between the bottom shield and the shared pole. The top pole is formed of high magnetic moment pole tip portion and a high resistivity yoke portion. The pole tip portion of the top pole is substantially coplanar with the yoke portion of the top pole. The pole tip portion of the top pole is separated from the shared pole at the air bearing surface by a write gap, while the yoke portion of the top pole is in contact with the shared pole opposite the air bearing surface. At least a portion of the conductive coil is positioned between the shared pole and the top pole.
