In some aspects, a process of the technology can include operations for receiving a free-to-play indication, the free-to-play indication specifying availability of a user associated with a media system, retrieving, via the network interface, peer information indicating an availability of one or more online peers of the user, and retrieving, via the network interface, activity information indicating one or more activities available to the user, and at least one of the online peers. A media player in quick menu provides a user with easy access to control content. The media player in the quick menu enables a user to perform operations on the currently watched programming. The media player in the quick menu also provides the user with supplemental information and accessibility to additional content.

An approach is provided for requesting access to content associated with a resource identifier. A system receives a first request to access content associated with a resource identifier. The system then determines to generate a second request for validating the content based, at least in part, on the resource identifier and to transmit the second request to a validation service. The system receives validation information based, at least in part, on the second request. In one embodiment, the validation information includes a preview of the content.

Various methods for implementing a multiple display mode are provided. One example method includes receiving an indication of a transition to a multiple display mode, and in response to at least receiving the indication of the transition to the multiple display mode, causing a home screen with home screen content to be displayed by a first display of a device.
