A status display system for storage device includes at least one logic device each having a plurality of physical device; and a plurality of device control means for controlling operations of the physical devices corresponding to a designated logic device in parallel in accordance with command from a host device. Preferably, the status display system is provided with status information generating means for collecting commands given to the device control means and responses to the commands given from the device control means, and generating a status information for the logic device; and display means provided corresponding to the logic device for displaying the status information in accordance with the generated status information.

An array disc memory apparatus connected to a computer and including disc drive modules for storing divided data. The apparatus provides means for confirming whether identification information read from disc drive modules installed in the equipment coincides with reference identification information read from disc drive modules previously installed in the same position every time the disc drive modules are replaced, increased or decreased, and produces either an alarm signal for stopping the computer sending a data write or read command to the array disc memory equipment or a data path instruction for allowing the divided data to be correctly written or read from the disc drive modules when the identification information does not coincide with the reference identification information.

In an array disk storage system, when a fault occurs in one of a plurality of regular disk storages and a disk storage for parity, restored data generated from data stored in the remaining functioning disks is written to the spare disk storage, and the restored data is copied to a new disk storage which has replaced the faulty disk. The writing of new data is carried out such that new data is written to both the spare disk storage and the new disk storage to which a writing of the restored data from the spare disk storage is being carried out, in response to an instruction from an upper grade device to write the new data.

An array disk apparatus capable of identifying locations where data reconstruction has failed. The apparatus comprises a disk controller containing a data reconstructing unit, a 'reconstruction unsuccessful' information generating unit and a 'reconstruction unsuccessful' information storing unit. The data reconstructing unit reconstructs lost data based on the data from the magnetic disk units other than the failed and repaired unit and on parity data associated with the data. The 'reconstruction unsuccessful' information generating unit generates 'reconstruction unsuccessful' information if another magnetic disk unit develops a read error during a data reconstruction process. The 'reconstruction unsuccessful' data storing unit stores the 'reconstruction unsuccessful' information to the failed magnetic disk unit after the repair thereof.
