A design family of contact lenses includes a central area utilized for distance vision, surrounded by multiple alternating annuli of near and distance optical powers, surrounded by a peripheral distance zone. The design can also be used in intraocular lenses (IOL). The distance optical power is constant across the design family of lenses, but the near optical power increases as a subject's presbyopia increases. The design family of contact lenses can be fitted to a patient in a standard fashion by fitting both eyes to the best distance visual acuity (VA), and obtaining near acuity from the near annuli. A modified monovision method fits the patient's dominant eye with a contact lens as described having the full prescription distance power and fitting the nondominant eye with a contact lens as described having a distance optical power between the full prescription distance optical power and the near optical power. Specifically, the nondominant eye is fitted with a contact lens as described but having a distance power between 50% and 100% of the range between the prescription near and distance optical powers, biased towards the distance optical power.

Contact lenses and method of fitting contact lenses

Combined multifocal toric lens designs are disclosed which combine a correction for astigmatism, either corneal or lenticular, with a correction for presbyopia. One of the front and back surfaces of the lens defines a toric surface for an astigmatic optical correction, and one of the front and back surfaces, which can be the same surface or the opposite surface, defines a multifocal surface for a presbyopic optical correction, to provide visual acuity for astigmatic presbyopes. Embodiments are disclosed wherein one surface of the lens design has a combined concentric annular ring, multifocal toric surface, and the other surface of the lens design has a spherical or aspherical surface. In other embodiments, one surface of the lens design has a toric surface for a toric correction, and the other surface of the lens design has a multifocal surface to provide a presbyopic correction, which may include concentric annular ring multifocal lens designs, or other presbyopic lens designs which contain more than one spherical or aspherical power such as aspheres, segments, progressive aspheres, diffractive, birefringent or other concentrics.

Combined multifocal toric lens designs

Programmable smooth junctions are provided for lenses and molds therefor, particularly for toric lens designs, which enable a numerically controlled (NC) machine to be programmed to machine smooth junctions or transitions between adjacent regions of a lens which have different thicknesses or radii of curvature. First and second mathematical functions f(a) and f(b) are defined which specify the curves of first and second segments of a lens surface. The slope dy/dx is derived of the first and second mathematical functions f(a) and f(b) at the transition between the first and second segments of the lens surface. A mathematical function is defined which describes a desired transition between the first and second segments of the lens. The first and second mathematical functions f(a) and f(b), the derived slopes dy/dx of the first and second mathematical functions f(a) and f(b), and the mathematical function describing the desired transition are then utilized to program a numerically controlled machine to machine the first and second segments of the lens surface and the desired transition between the first and second segments.

Programmable smooth junctions on lenses

Non-ballasted, eyelid rotationally stabilized designs are disclosed for use in toric or multifocal toric contact lenses. The back surface of the lens includes a toric or multifocal toric surface and also thin top and bottom zones (slab offs) to achieve eyelid rotational orientation and stabilization. The advantage of this technical approach is in mold manufacturing, wherein the design allows the use of any chosen power spherical stock front mold.
