A system for estimating a quantity of parasitic leakage of a fluid from a fluid collection unit includes a pressure sensor and a control circuit. The pressure sensor is coupled to the fluid collection unit and configured to produce a pressure value indicative of the pressure of the fluid collection unit. The control circuit is operable to determine a change in pressure value of the fluid collection unit and estimate the quantity of parasitic leakage based on the change in pressure value. The control circuit may also be operable to determine a bulk modulus value of the fluid and estimate the quantity of parasitic leakage based on the change in pressure value and the bulk modulus value.

A system for estimating an auxiliary-injected fuel quantity includes a fuel injector for injecting fuel into an engine, a fuel pump supplying fuel to a fuel collection unit that then supplies fuel to the fuel injector, and a control circuit that generates an auxiliary-injected fuel quantity estimation model by disabling the fuel pump prior to fuel injection, and enabling the fuel pump to resume fuel pumping following fuel injection, by the fuel injector, determines a first pressure in the fuel collection unit after stabilization of the fuel pressure therein following disablement of the fuel pump and prior to the fuel injection, determines a second pressure in the fuel collection unit after the fuel injection and prior to resuming pumping of fuel by the fuel pump, and forms the model as a function of the first and second pressures and an injector on-time for a number of different engine operating conditions.

System for estimating auxiliary-injected fueling quantities

A variable pressure fuel injection system and multi-flow rate injector is provided which produces multiple fuel injection flow rates from a common source of pressurized fuel to enable reductions in emissions, combustion noise and particulates while improving fuel consumption. The present invention includes inner and outer needle valve elements biased into respective closed positions against respective valve seats for controlling the flow through corresponding sets of injection orifices. The movement of each valve is controlled by an injection control valve controlling the drain flow of control fuel from respective control volumes positioned at outer ends of the valve elements. Valve element bias spring preloads along with control flow orifices and needle valve element surface areas are selected to cause, for example, single valve operation at low fuel supply pressure and dual valve operation at high supply pressure.

A closed needle injector assembly and method are provided which effectively extending injection duration and improving fueling accuracy at part load conditions, providing a low quantity detached pilot injection at all operating conditions and controlling the duration of, and dwell time between, the pilot injection and one or more higher flow rate primary injections independent of fuel injection pressure. The closed needle injector assembly includes first and second needle valve elements, respective control volumes and a single injection control valve to control the movement of the needle valve elements. A sequencing device is mounted on the injector to permit movement of only the inner needle valve element to define a low fuel injection rate event and permit selectively, controlled movement of both the inner and outer needle valve elements to open positions to define a subsequent primary fuel injection event.

A fuel injection system is disclosed for an internal combustion engine that has multiple combustion chambers and a camshaft which cyclically imparts pressurization energy to and recovers pressurization energy from fuel being supplied to the engine. The fuel injection system includes a plurality of unit injectors, a camshaft linkage which simultaneously reciprocates pressurizing plungers of a set of at least two unit injectors and an interconnecting line which allows selective fluid interconnection between fuel pressurization chambers formed within the unit injectors. The interconnection line allows fluid linkage of the volume of fuel which is simultaneously pressurized and depressurized within the interconnected fuel pressurization chambers of a first set of unit injectors.

A fuel injection pressure control system includes a control strategy operable to measure or estimate actual fuel injection pressure and control the operation of a fuel supply pump to thereby quickly and accurately control fuel injection pressure. The control strategy includes a closed-loop control strategy operable to compensate for instantaneous changes in system non-linearities, including fuel pump non-linearities and the like, and an open-loop control strategy operable to compensate for all system variations as well as system non-linearities, including between-engine variations in system operating parameters and other noise factors including deteriorating conditions, changes in environment and the like. Each strategy includes an adaptive controller operable to update one or more control parameters to thereby guarantee closed-loop stability, provide for fast and accurate system response during transient events, and minimize overshoots and undershoots.

A control valve comprising a valve housing including a valve cavity, an inlet means formed in the valve housing for directing fluid into the valve cavity, and an outlet means formed in the valve housing for directing fluid out of the valve cavity. The control valve further includes a valve element mounted for reciprocal movement in the valve cavity between open and closed positions and biased toward the closed position by fluid pressure forces. A valve seat is associated with the valve element which engages the valve seat when in the closed position and permits flow between the valve seat and the valve element when in the open position. A flow force inducing means is positioned adjacent the valve element for redirecting fluid from the inlet means through a predetermined flow path arranged relative to the valve element to cause fluid flow to impact the valve element and create flow induced forces of sufficient magnitude necessary to advantageously counteract the fluid pressure forces.

An improved plunger and barrel assembly is provided which includes a plunger reciprocally mounted in a cavity formed in the barrel and a leakage flow reduction device positioned in the cavity for reducing fluid leakage flow around the plunger thus increasing system efficiency. The leakage flow reduction device includes a sealing sleeve removably mounted in the cavity between the plunger and the barrel, which includes a bore for slidably receiving the plunger to form an annular clearance gap between the plunger and the bore. The sealing sleeve is designed to resiliently flex in response to fluid pressure forces to reduce the annular clearance gap so as to minimize fluid leakage through the annular clearance gap. The sealing sleeve is formed as a separate piece from the barrel to permit simple, low cost replacement. The sealing sleeve is preferably applied to a fuel pump having a pump plunger for pressurizing fuel in a high pressure chamber.

An effervescent fuel injector, particularly one suitable for diesel and direct injection engine applications, which is capable of injecting, particularly intermittently, an atomized fuel spray with droplets of a size in the range of 5-6 micron SMD without requiring high pressures is achieved in a preferred embodiment effervescent fuel injector of the valve covered orifice (VCO) type having primary and secondary nozzle valves which remain closed when the control valve is not actuated, but which open one or two sets of nozzle orifices depending on fuel volume requirements. A three-way, on-off control valve is used to trigger commencement of the supply of gas via a control valve simultaneously with opening of at least some of the nozzle orifices. Gas and fuel are mixed in a mixing chamber located upstream of the nozzle valves in a manner creating a gas-fuel aeration, and as the aeration is sprayed from the nozzle orifices, the gas expands rapidly breaking the fuel into fine droplets.

Effervescent injector for diesel engines

An improved nozzle assembly for servo-controlled fuel injectors is provided which includes a needle valve control device including a rate shaping control device for effectively producing a predetermined time varying change in the flow rate of fuel injected into the combustion chamber during an injection event so as to reduce emissions. The rate shaping control device includes an injection control valve positioned along a drain circuit connected to a control volume positioned at one end of the needle valve element. The injection control valve includes an actuator for controlling the flow of fuel through the drain circuit to variably control the rate of movement of the needle valve element between the open and closed positions so as to provide the desired shaping to the flow rate of fuel into the combustion chamber. The injection control valve may include a control valve element positioned in the control volume adjacent the needle valve element for cooperating with the needle valve element to control the drain flow of fuel through the drain circuit during the injection event. The needle valve element may include a valve surface wherein positioning of the control valve member relative to the valve surface controls drain flow through the drain circuit. The valve surface may be either a flat valve surface or a conically shaped surface for positive abutment by the control valve member, or alternatively, the needle valve element and the control valve member may be of the spool-type.

Injection rate shaping nozzle assembly for a fuel injector

The improved needle controlled common rail fuel system of the present invention includes split common rails serving respective sets of unit injectors. Each unit injector includes a mechanically actuated plunger reciprocally mounted to cyclically create gradual periods of increasing pressure in the common rail during the advancement stroke of the plunger followed by respective periods of decreasing pressure during the plunger's retraction stroke. The fuel injectors include a pressure control valve for controlling the amount of fuel pressurized by the plunger and a needle valve control device including an injection control valve for creating an injection event during a pumping event by controlling the fuel flow to drain so as to control the fuel pressure forces acting on an injector needle valve element. A flow limiting device is provided to limit the fuel flow from a control volume to drain during an injection event thus reducing parasitic losses while maintaining quick valve closing. In addition, a pressure energy recuperation means is provided which utilizes the pressure of the fuel in each injector's pressure chamber as a result of the pressure energy stored in the fuel to assist in retraction of the injector plunger during each pumping event.

Needle controlled fuel system with cyclic pressure generation

An integrated fuel injector and ignitor assembly is provided which includes an injector body, a fuel control valve and an ignition device. The components are packaged to create a compact assembly for positioning within an injector mounting bore and particularly in a mounting bore of an existing diesel engine. The assembly may include a fuel reservoir for accumulating fuel for injection so as to stabilize the injection pressure. Also, the ignition device may include an ignition coil mounted on the injector body and a replaceable ignitor electrode cartridge mounted on an opposite end of the injector body to permit simple, cost effective replacement of the electrodes/spark plug.
