A liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates each provided with an electrode including one substrate having thereon a color filter and a coating layer, and a liquid crystal layer comprising a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed together with spacer beads between the pair of substrates, wherein the liquid crystal layer has a thickness smaller than a diameter of the spacer beads and a maximum thickness of the coating layer, the coating layer having a pencil hardness of at most 7 H. The above layer structure between the substrates is effective in improving resistance to external shock and providing a uniform cell gap.

A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of electrode plates and a liquid crystal composition disposed between the electrode plates. At least one of the electrode plates comprises a light-transmissive substrate, a plurality of electrodes including principal electrodes and auxiliary electrodes supported on the light-transmissive substrate, and an insulating layer. Each auxiliary electrode is disposed between an associated principal electrode and the light-transmissive substrate so as to be electrically connected with at least a part of the associated principal electrode, and the auxiliary electrodes being disposed with spacings therebetween which are filled with the insulating layer. The liquid crystal composition comprises at least one species of a fluorine-containing mesomorphic compound comprising a fluorocarbon terminal portion and a hydrocarbon terminal portion, the terminal portions being connected with a central core, and having smectic mesophase or latent smectic mesophase. The combination of the above specific cell structure and the specific liquid crystal composition is effective in improving display quality (e.g., contrast) while minimizing a voltage waveform deformation.

A color liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate having thereon a layer of plural color filter segments and a layer of first transparent electrodes disposed in superposition with the layer of color filter segments, a second substrate disposed opposite to and spaced apart from the first substrate and having thereon a layer of second transparent electrodes intersecting with the first transparent electrodes, and a liquid crystal disposed between the first and second substrates so as to form plural color pixels each at a region of intersection of the first and second transparent electrodes superposed with one of the color filter segments while leaving a pixel spacing between the plural color pixels. The first substrate is provided with a first light-interrupting layer comprising a material identical to that of at least one of the plural color filter segments and disposed at a portion of the pixel spacing so as to mask the portion, and at least one of the first and second substrates is provided with a second light-interrupting layer masking a remaining portion of the pixel spacing. The first and second light-interrupting layers as a whole are effective in preventing leakage of light between color pixels, thus providing images with a high contrast and an excellent display quality.

Color liquid crystal display device and process for producing same

The invention provides a color liquid crystal panel which has a liquid crystal placed between a first substrate and a second substrate, the first substrate having formed thereon a plurality of color filter films and transparent electrodes and the second substrate having formed thereto a transparent electrode. It also has first light-shielding layer sections. formed on the first substrate either in the same layer as the color filter film or in a layer at the substrate side from the color filter films, without contacting the color filter films. It further has second light-shielding layer sections formed in a layer at the liquid crystal layer side from the color filter films. Light is completely shielded by the first light-shielding layer sections and/or the second light-shielding layer section(s) between the color filter films. Such a color liquid crystal panel is highly effective in shielding the gaps between the color filter films, and is less reflective to external light or the like at the display surface.

A liquid crystal device is constituted by disposing a liquid crystal layer between a pair of oppositely disposed substrates each provide with an electrode in the form of stripes. The liquid crystal layer comprises a liquid crystal disposed in a region which is enclosed by the pair of substrates and a sealing agent disposed so as to form a peripheral wall having an injection port. The liquid crystal device has an effective optical modulation region and a peripheral region, including the injection port other than the optical modulation region. On at least one substrate, at least one elongated projection having a height smaller than a thickness of the liquid crystal layer is formed in the peripheral region including the injection port and in a direction parallel to the stripe electrode on the same substrate and perpendicular to a liquid crystal injection direction.
