A web-fed, multicolor, offset printing press having a plurality of printing units for printing different-color images on a continuous web of paper. Each printing unit includes a three-part plate cylinder rotatably supported between a pair of confronting framing walls. The plate cylinder is split into three parts which each have two newspaper pages width. The three parts of the plate cylinder are each capable of adjustable displacement both laterally and circumferentially of the plate cylinder for registration. Lateral and circumferential adjustments for the three parts of the plate cylinder are all mounted outside the framing walls.

A web width adjusting device comprises a pressure force applying unit for applying pressure force to one side surface of a paper web which is successively traveled through two or more printing sections. Further the web width adjusting device may also include a counter pressure applying unit to apply counter pressure to the other side surface of the paper web. The pressure applying unit (and the counter pressure applying unit) deformes the paper web in a wavy surface which causes the width of the paper web to be shortened. The adjusting factors for the web width are controlled by automatic control system which detects traveling condition of the paper web, the generation of shears in printing, etc.

A device for adjusting an ink supply gap is employed in an ink fountain apparatus in which the bottom portion of the ink fountain apparatus forms a space for storing ink in cooperation with a peripheral surface of an ink fountain roller while a forward edge of the bottom portion faces the peripheral surface of the ink fountain roller in order to form a gap serving as an ink supply port. The device for adjusting an ink supply gap includes a plurality of blade segments and a plurality of ultrasonic linear motors corresponding to the blade segments. The blade segments are disposed on a base in a row extending in the axial direction of the ink fountain roller and are adapted to individually advance toward or retract from the ink fountain roller so as to adjust the opening of the ink supply port. The ultrasonic linear motors are adapted to individually advance or retract the corresponding blade segments.

Disclosed is an ink supplying apparatus which can drive and rotate a fountain roller at an arbitrary speed independently of the peripheral speed of a roller adjacent to the fountain roller when an ink fountain is fitted to a rotary press, which does not require large-scale maintenance and inspection, which is free from any danger, and which is equipped with an ink fountain having a fountain roller capable of being fitted to and removed from a suitable position corresponding to a maximum printing width.
