A technology for displaying images on a displaying apparatus mounted on a vehicle is provided. In response to a predetermined instruction signal, synthetic images viewed from a virtual viewpoint around and above the periphery of the vehicle are generated based on a plurality of images acquired from a plurality of cameras for capturing the periphery of the vehicle. The plurality of synthetic images, in which a position of a viewpoint moves sequentially varies such that the synthetic images move in a circle around the vehicle, are sequentially output to the displaying apparatus. Accordingly, the user monitors the entire circumference of the vehicle from the viewpoint where the user sees the vehicle in front of user's eyes, so that the user can intuitively recognize the positional relation between the vehicle and an obstacle from one screen.

A storage part of an on-vehicle apparatus stores simplified map data of which content is simplified as compared to original map data used for route guidance. An image generator of the on-vehicle apparatus retrieves the simplified map data stored on the storage part and generates a map image based on the simplified map data. Then a transmitter of the on-vehicle apparatus transmits the map image generated by the image generator to a portable device, in response to a demand from the portable device.

An in-vehicle display apparatus includes a communication device and an in-vehicle device. The communication device acquires information posted by the user and geographical location data indicating the destination of the posted information and classifies the acquired posted information into categories. The communication device generates map data in which the posted information is displayed in a display format corresponding to the classified category at a position on the map specified by the geographical location data that is acquired together with the posted information and transmits the map data to the in-vehicle device. The in-vehicle device displays the received map data on, for example, a liquid crystal monitor.

An in-vehicle display apparatus includes a communication device and an in-vehicle device. The communication device acquires posted information and geographical location data indicating the destination of the posted information. Then, the communication device generates map data in which the posted information is displayed at a position specified by the geographical location data which is acquired together with the posted information. In addition, the communication device changes a method of displaying the posted information on the generated map data on the basis of the time elapsed from the posting of the information to the acquisition of the posted information and the category of the posted information. An in-vehicle apparatus links up with a mobile device that executes an application. A memory of the in-vehicle apparatus stores acoustic data of a sound relevant to the application, and a receiver receives a direction signal transmitted from the mobile device at a timing specified by the application. An output part of the in-vehicle apparatus outputs the sound based on the acoustic data stored in the memory via a speaker in response to the direction signal received by the receiver.

A technology for intuitively recognizing a positional relation between a vehicle and an object is provided. In an image display system, in a display image provided to a driver, the side region of the vehicle in a direction indicated by a direction instructing device is displayed in large size. Accordingly, the object that may contact with the vehicle is easily found out, so that a minor crash accident can be effectively prevented. Since a synthetic image viewed from a virtual viewpoint directed from a rear position of the vehicle toward the front side of the vehicle is displayed, the side area of the vehicle is displayed in the same visual field direction as the direction of the visual field of the driver. Accordingly, the driver can intuitively recognize the positional relation between the vehicle and the object, without undertaking complicated determination such as conducting coordinate transformation in his/her mind.

A technology that does not require complicated operation to select a display mode is provided. In an image display system, a back mode stores a display mode that has been recently set as a current mode. When the display mode becomes the back mode next time, the display mode that has been recently set as a current mode is set as a current mode immediately after the display mode becomes the back mode. Accordingly, the driver does not need to perform the complicated operation to select a desired display mode each time the vehicle is reversed.

When displaying a peripheral image in the case where a traveling speed of a vehicle is lower than a predetermined threshold value, it is possible to provide a user with a state of a necessary area of the vehicle without switching a display mode. In an image display system, when the traveling speed of the vehicle drops to below a predetermined threshold value such that an operation mode shifts into a front mode, the display mode becomes a front/side mode that simultaneously displays both a front area and a side area of the vehicle at the time that the front mode is started. A screen presented in the front/side mode can respond to various circumstances such as approaching an intersection, passing by another vehicle, and moving a vehicle toward a roadside. Accordingly, a user can monitor a state of a necessary area around the vehicle, without switching the display mode.
