A discharge lamp includes an emitter other than thorium, which is added to a cathode in a luminous tube. Early depletion of the emitter due to excessive vaporization of the emitter from the cathode is prevented, while achieving stable lighting even at the start-up of the lighting. A main body part () of the cathode () is made from a high-melting-point metal material that contains no thorium, and a front end part () thereof is made from a high-melting-point metal material that contains an emitter (other than thorium). A sintered compact (), which contains an emitter (other than thorium) at a concentration higher than the emitter contained in the front end part (), is buried in a sealed space () that is formed within the main body part () and/or the front end part (). The sintered compact () abuts against the front end part ().

Discharge lamp

A discharge lamp includes a cathode in a luminous tube, and an emitter, other than thorium, is added to the cathode. The emitter is prevented from being excessively vaporized from the cathode and depleted soon. Smooth lighting is enabled even at start-up. A main body part () of the cathode () is made from a metallic material having a high melting point and containing no thorium. A front end () is made from a metallic material having a high melting point and containing an emitter (excepting thorium). Inside a sealed space () formed in the main body part () and/or the front end part () is received a sintered compact () containing an emitter (excepting thorium) that is higher in concentration than the emitter contained in the front end part ().

A short arc type mercury lamp structure has Hg and a rare gas which are enclosed inside a light-emitting tube. Kr is enclosed as the rare gas. It is possible to realize the initial intensity of radiation at the same level as in the case in which Ar is enclosed and prevent a sudden decrease in the intensity of radiation when the lamp is lighted for a long time. The longevity of the lamp is greatly increased than that of a lamp in which Ar is enclosed. The anode satisfies the formula:1&#x2212;/(&#xd7;tan &#x3b8;)&#x2267;0.66,where r (mm) is the radius of the leading end surface of the anode, &#x3b8;(&#xb0;) is the angle between the electrode axis and the taper surface in the axial cross-section of the anode, and d(mm) is the inter-electrode distance.

Short arc type mercury lamp

Disclosed herein is a short arc discharge lamp which has a cathode electrode structure formed by solid-phase bonding a tip part made of thoriated tungsten to a body part made of tungsten. According to the present invention, the bonding strength between the body part and the tip part is increased to the same level as the mechanical strength of tungsten, thus preventing a breakage from being caused on a junction interface. For this, on a section of the cathode electrode taken along a line perpendicular to the junction interface, in an arbitrary portion of 500 &#x3bc;m or more in length along the junction interface, when a length of the arbitrary portion along the junction interface is set to L, and a sum of lengths of tungsten crystal grains, along the junction interface, that are present through the junction interface is set to L, (L/L0)&#x2267;0.16 is satisfied.

Short arc discharge lamp

A light source device that irradiates a discharge vessel with a laser beam to produce radiant light that is reflected by an ellipsoidal reflecting surface efficiently utilizes the light produced by directing the laser beam through an unirradiated region where reflected light from the ellipsoidal reflector is blocked by the discharge vessel, through an opening side of the ellipsoidal reflector to the discharge vessel. The discharge vessel has an emission substance enclosed inside which is excited by the laser beam and produces radiant light, is arranged at a focal point of the ellipsoidal reflector. A planar mirror, with which radiant light reflected by the ellipsoidal reflector is reflected in a different direction has a window in an unirradiated region where reflected light from the ellipsoidal reflector is blocked by the discharge vessel through which the laser beam passes to the discharge vessel.

Light source device

A high pressure discharge lamp has a sealing portion that is made of glass and a sealing metal piece. In a method of manufacturing the high pressure discharge lamp, the sealing metal piece is irradiated with laser beam whose pulse width is 1&#xd7;10seconds or less, so as to carry out a surface treatment of the sealing metal piece. The sealing metal piece may have a groove that is 120 to 600 nm in depth and 450 to 1,200 nm in width.

In a light source device provided with a light emission tube in which a light emitting element is enclosed and at least one laser oscillator part for radiating a laser beam towards said light emission tube, for focusing a beam within a light emission tube with a large solid angle and for preventing that the beam with a high energy density impinges upon the wall of the light emission tube, the light emission tube has a tube wall, part of which is made to function as a focusing means, or the light emission tube has a focusing means at the inner surface thereof.

An laser driven light source comprises a bulb that encloses a discharge medium, a laser beam unit for emitting a laser beam, wherein the laser beam is focused in the bulb for generating a discharge, and a beam shield element that is provided in the bulb to shield peripheral devices from the laser beam, which passes through the discharge generated in the bulb.

Laser driven light source

A light source is provided. The light source includes: an elliptical reflection mirror having first and second focal points; a discharge chamber in which a luminescent substance is enclosed and which is disposed on the first focal point; a laser light generator which emits the laser light; and a laser light guide which guides the laser light from an opening side of the elliptical reflection mirror into the discharge chamber. The luminescent substance is excited by providing the laser light to the luminescent substance so as to emit light, and the light is reflected by the elliptical reflection mirror. The laser light guide is disposed in a shade area in which the light reflected by the elliptical reflection mirror is blocked by the discharge chamber.

A short arc type mercury lamp in which a cathode and an anode are disposed opposite one another inside an arc tube, at least a noble gas and mercury are filled into the arc tube, cathode contains thorium oxide, a cone-shaped part that continues on from a cathode body is formed on the cathode, and a protruding part that continues on from the cone-shaped part is formed, wherein the number of grain boundaries on a straight line that passes through the approximate center of an arbitrary section in the radial direction of the protruding part is at least 0.5 per mm but not more than 100 per mm.

A short arc mercury discharge lamp including an arc tube filled with at least mercury and a rare gas, a cathode and an anode positioned opposite to each other within the arc tube, the cathode having an tapered area which tapers in a direction towards the anode and a projection which protrudes from the tapered area in a direction towards the anode. The amount of mercury to be added in the arc tube is in a range of 0.2&lE;n&lE;52, where n is the weight (mg/cm ) of the mercury per unit of volume, and a pressure of the rare gas to be added in the arc tube is in a range of 0.1&lE;p&lE;800, where p is the pressure (kPa) of the rare gas at an ambient temperature of 25&deg; C.

Mercury discharge lamp of the short arc type

A mercury lamp of the short arc type which can stably emit an intense spectrum at a wavelength of 365 nm with an extremely narrowed band region over a long time, and which has an anode and a cathode disposed opposite one another in a silica glass arc tube which is filled with mercury and a rare gas, is achieved by the amount of mercury being less than or equal to 1.0 mg/cc of the inside volume of the arc tube and at least one of the gases argon (Ar) and krypton (Kr) are used as the rare gas at room temperature with 1.0 to 8.0 atm.

To devise a mercury lamp of the short arc type with high radiant efficiency and increased arc stability which meets the demand for increasing the amount of radiation from the light source. In a mercury lamp of the short arc type, a cathode and an anode are disposed opposite one another within an arc tube filled with mercury and a rare gas. At least argon (Ar) and/or krypton (Kr) in an amount from 1.0 to 8.0 atm at room temperature is added as the rare gas. In addition, the relationship between various dimensions of the lamp is fixed such that conditions 0.3&lE;X/L&lE;0.6, (X&plus;5)/D&lE;0.85, and (L&minus;(X&plus;5))/D&lE;0.85 are satisfied, L (mm) being the length of the bulb in the axial direction, X (mm) being the length of the cathode which projects in the axial direction into the emission space, and D (mm) being the maximum outside diameter of the bulb in the radial direction.

To devise a mercury lamp of the short arc type with high power in which an arc tube can be kept unfouled over a long time and the demand for an increase in the amount of radiation can be met, in a quartz arc tube, a cathode and an anode are disposed opposite one another and the arc tube is filled with mercury and a rare gas. At least argon (Ar) and/or krypton (Kr) in an amount from 1.0 to 8 atm at room temperature is added as the rare gas. The amount depends on the value of ((Wd).sup.1/2 /R) where R is half the maximum diameter of the bulb in cm, d is the thickness of the bulb in cm, and W the input power supplied to the lamp in kW.
