An AC system having, for example, a voltage source, an inductance and a load has connected thereto an apparatus for controlling the phase and amplitude of the voltage of the system. The instantaneous current and voltage in the AC electrical system are measured and power measurements derived therefrom. The power measurements may be instantaneous real and imaginary power, instantaneous active and reactive power, or active and reactive power averaged over less than one cycle. The power measurements are then used to derive phase related control values, on the basis of which control signals are generated to a converter. The action of the converter in accordance with the control signals thus controls the amplitude and phase of the voltage. By use of power measurements, it is not necessary to measure the phase of the voltage of the AC system.

Method and apparatus for controlling the output voltage of an AC

A power converting apparatus comprises self-commutated converter, fault current restricting device, fault detector, and cutoff circuit. Self-commutated converter converts AC power supplied from an AC power system into DC power and supplying the DC power to a common DC circuit, and for converting DC power supplied from the DC circuit into AC power and supplying the AC power to the AC power system. The fault current restricting device is inserted between the self-commutated converted and the DC circuit, and includes a diode provided to permit a DC circuit current to flow from the self-commutated coverter to the DC circuit, and a series circuit having a reactor and a DC power supply and connected in parallel to the diode. The fault detector detects a fault current generated when self-commutated converter is short-circuited. When the fault detector detects a short circuit occurring in self-commutated converter, the cutoff circuit cuts off power supply to that self-commutated converter. With this structure, the DC power supply supplies a circulating current according to a rated current of the self-commutated converter to the reactor and the diode.

Power converting apparatus capable of suppressing a fault current

A coupling system in which power converters are coupled through a DC circuit to exchange active power between the converters comprises a control apparatus for controlling active power exchanged between each converter and its AC system. The control apparatus includes an automatic active power regulator for regulating active power exchanged between the converters and the AC system to be equal to be predetermined active power reference value, and an automatic DC voltage regulator for regulating a DC voltage of the DC circuit to be equal to a predetermined DC voltage reference value. When an output signal from the automatic active power requlator of each converter is input as an upper limit value of an output signal from the automatic DC voltage regulator, a DC voltage reference value of one converter is set to be equal to or larger than a DC voltage reference value of the remaining power converter.
