The invention comprises a hydrogen source, a detachable connecting port to which a hydrogen storage container is connected in order to store hydrogen supplied from the hydrogen source, a container cooling unit (an air blower) for cooling a hydrogen storage container connected to the connecting port, a container connection recognition unit (a limit switch, a controller) for recognizing connection of a hydrogen storage container to the connecting port, and a fill-up detection unit (a pressure transmitter, a hydrogen remaining sensor, a controller) for detecting that the hydrogen storage container connected to the connecting port is filled up with hydrogen. Consequently, it contributes to simple and safe hydrogen filling in the general public.

In a heat transfer pipe, annular grooves in a direction inclined at an angle of 45&deg; to 90&deg; with respect to an axis of the pipe are continuously formed at an interval in a longitudinal direction of the pipe. The annular grooves desirably have a groove depth of 0.20 mm or more, and a groove pitch of two to five times larger than the groove depth. Moreover, a ratio W/P of a bottom width W of projections of the grooves to the groove pitch P is desirably 0.1 to 0.9.

Pressure detection means are provided to detect a gas pressure in a gas absorption and release container. A judgment portion judges the limit of gas absorption and release on the basis of comparison between the gas pressure detected by the pressure detection means and a setting pressure predetermined in a setting portion. A control portion sends out a control signal to a heat medium means, a gas supply means and a gas transportation means on the basis of the result of the judgment to thereby switch over the operation between gas absorption and gas release.

Hydrogen gas from an generator (1) is occluded in a hydrogen recovery container (20), thereafter, in the initial stage during which hydrogen gas is released from the hydrogen recovery container (20), initially purged hydrogen gas containing much amount of impure gas is introduced from the hydrogen recovery container (20) to a gas tank (2) and saved therein, then, hydrogen gas having high purity released from a hydrogen absorbing alloy in the hydrogen recovery container (20) is refluxed to the generator (1), and this process comprising absorbing and releasing of hydrogen gas in the hydrogen recovery container (20) and saving in the gas tank (2) is repeated once or several times, successively, the hydrogen gas containing much amount of impure gas saved in the gas tank (2) is introduced in the hydrogen recovery container (20) and occluded therein, thereafter, in the initial stage during which hydrogen gas is released from the hydrogen recovery container (20), the hydrogen gas containing much amount of impure gas is discharged outside, then hydrogen gas having high purity released from the hydrogen absorbing alloy in the hydrogen recovery container (20) is refluxed to the generator (1).
