A tandem mill has a plurality of stands and has at each stand one mill suitably selected from a common four-high mill, a sleeve sliding mill, an intermediate back-up roll shifting mill, and a sleeve expanding mill.

Width and thickness of a hot-rolled and descaled strip are controlled by performing, in a line in which the strip runs, a rough control step for reducing correction of the width and the thickness of the strip in only the longitudinal ends thereof and a fine control step for reducing correction of the width and the thickness of the strip over the entire length thereof, respectively at least one time, so that the desired width and thickness of the strip are obtained in the last reduction.

Method and apparatus for controlling width and thickness of strip

A clean cold strip is produced by injecting at a high pressure a rolling mill lubricant emulsion of a low concentration to both the sides of a strip at the last stand of a rolling mill, thereby removing oil and metal dust therefrom, charging the cold strip as rolled into a box annealing furnace, mixing water steam with an atmospheric gas of the annealing furnace consisting mainly of nitrogen and hydrogen, and adjusting the dew point of the gas within the furnace to 0.degree.-10.degree. C.
