An optical device includes a light-shielding layer and a microlens array. The light-shielding layer includes a plurality of openings. The microlens array is divided into a plurality of microlenses corresponding to the respective plurality of openings. A refractive index of the microlens array is variable so that light is incident on the microlenses is focused on the respective plurality of openings. A portion where light is focused includes a central position of the corresponding opening.

According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a first electrode, a second electrode, a partition electrode, a luminescent layer and a voltage source. The luminescent layer includes a luminescent material emitting light rays due to an electrochemical oxidation or reduction reaction thereof. The voltage source is configured to generate a driving voltage between the first and second electrodes so as to apply first and second potentials, wherein the first and second potentials are maintained at one and opposite polarities in respect to the reference potential during a predetermined segment period respectively and are periodically reversed, each of the first and second potentials is changed first to second absolute levels during the predetermined segment period, the second absolute potential is determined depending on the gradation of input image data, and the first absolute potential is higher than the second absolute potential.

Display device and method of driving the same

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal/polymer complex includes a liquid crystal material, a polymer, and a chiral agent. The liquid crystal material exhibits blue phase and contains liquid crystal molecules that are spirally arranged to form liquid crystal molecular cylinders having a spiral arrangement. The polymer maintains the arrangement and has a dendrimer-type structure including a dendrimer unit and a polymerizable unit bonded to an end of the dendrimer unit. The dendrimer unit contains a central atom and at least two branched structures bonded to the central atom and has a generation of two or more. The polymerizable unit contains a polymerizable group which can bond to a polymerizable group.

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal composition includes a liquid crystal material and a polymer. The liquid crystal material exhibits a blue phase. The polymer has a first repeating unit containing a fluorine atom and an acrylic group.

According to one embodiment, a light-emitting device includes an emitting layer, first and second electrodes, a voltage-supply circuit, an ammeter and a controller. The emitting layer includes a solution containing an emitting material and a solvent. The first and second electrodes are in contact with the solution. The voltage-supply circuit applies an operating voltage between the first and second electrodes. The ammeter measures the amount of electric current flowing between the first and second electrodes. The controller controls the operation of the voltage-supply circuit such that the polarity of the operating voltage reverses and determining a timing of reversing the polarity based on the output of the ammeter.

After supply of power, a liquid crystal display device performing transition from a first state to a second state different from the first state before a display operation is provided with a transition nucleus forming portion around a pixel electrode or inside. The transition nucleus forming portion performs transition to the second state prior to other portion during a transition drive period. The transition nucleus forming portion of the pixel electrode has an edge portion formed into a reverse taper shape decreasing in its thickness toward the tip end. Therefore, transition from a splay alignment to a bend alignment is performed with simple element and drive circuit configuration in all pixels.

A light-emitting device is provide, which includes a first substrate, a first electrode and a second electrode, which are disposed above the first substrate and insulated from each other, enabling a difference in electrical potential to be given between the first electrode and the second electrode, a second substrate disposed to face the first substrate and spaced apart from the first substrate, a light-emitting layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, the light-emitting layer includes a light-emitting material which emits light through an electrochemical oxidation or reduction thereof and chloride ions, and a barrier electrode interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode to partition the light-emitting layer. This barrier electrode is used as a standard for the electrical potential.

Display device

A liquid crystal display includes an insulating substrate, an alignment layer covering a main surface of the insulating substrate, and electrodes interposed therebetween. The alignment layer defines an alignment direction parallel to the main surface, an upstream side as one end's side of the alignment direction, and a downstream side as another end's side of the alignment direction, and tilts liquid crystal molecules toward the downstream side. Each electrode includes an upstream section that includes a first edge facing the upstream side and a downstream section that includes a second edge facing the downstream side and is provided with a recess recessed relative to the second edge. The first recess forms on the downstream section a third edge extending in the alignment direction and a fourth edge connecting the third edge to the second edge and facing the upstream side.

Liquid crystal display

Large size flat display panels are used in many technical fields, with television (TV) sets, personal computers (PCs) and advertising equipment. A multiple panel display device has been developed which employs a plurality of separate flat-surface display panel modules united by adhesion together into a matrix array of rows and columns. Juncture sections of the panels have non-displayable regions between adjacent ones of the panels. To avoid seam lines visible to the human eye, the seams are minimized in width. To this end, the peripheral ends of display panels are provided with a concave/projection configuration or gap for limiting excessive expansion of a sealing material used. This significantly reduces the width of such non-display region at the juncture section of neighboring display panels bonded together.

A liquid crystal display device includes a matrix array of picture elements formed on a plurality of tiled switching array substrates, a first substrate having pixel electrodes arranged in parallel on the picture elements, a second substrate having a counter electrode, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. The picture elements include first picture elements arranged on every column from both sides of a connecting boundary A-A' of the switching array substrates and second picture elements arranged alternately with the first picture elements, and have a black matrix for shielding a region between the adjacent picture elements. A plurality of data lines may be disposed collectively between the first picture elements. With the configuration as described above, a liquid crystal display device having high productivity, a large display screen and high display quality can be provided.

An electronic circuit device includes a substrate, a wiring layer formed on the surface of the substrate and essentially consisting of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of gold, copper, tin, and aluminum, a bump formed on the wiring layer and essentially consisting of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of gold, copper, and aluminum, and a micro electronic element formed on the bump, wherein solid-phase diffusion bonding is performed at least either between the wiring layer and the bump or between the bump and an electrode of the micro electronic element.

Electronic circuit device

The image display apparatus is capable of displaying an image on a large screen in which non-display regions are completely eliminated or minimized. The image display apparatus comprises an opposite board in which common electrodes made of transparent conductive resin are respectively formed on both surfaces of a transparent substrate. A plurality of array boards in each of which semiconductor element and a signal line are formed on a transparent substrate are arranged on both surfaces of the opposite board, such that display regions of end portions of the array boards face each other a sandwich of the opposite board inserted therebetween. Frame-like sealing members made of transparent resin are respectively inserted in clearances between the opposite board and the array boards. Liquid crystal is enclosed in each of spaces surrounded by the frame-like sealing members between the opposite board and the array boards.

An electronic circuit device comprising a printed wiring board having a major surface and pads provided on the major surface of the printed wiring board, a plurality of electrodes provided partly on at least one major surface of the leadless component and partly on sides of the leadless component, a plurality of bumps provided on the pads, providing a gap between the major surface of the printed wiring board and the major surface of the leadless component, and electrically connecting those parts of the electrodes which are provided on the major surface of the leadless component to the pads, and a plurality of electrically conductive members integral with the bumps, extending from the bumps to those parts of the electrodes which are provided on the sides of the leadless component.
