An image reproducing apparatus with or without an ADF has an optical system for scanning an original, a developing unit, a fixing unit, a differential amplifier, and a microcomputer. Original image density can be measured properly in any mode of the apparatus. The image is reproduced to have optimal density by a lamp control voltage from the differential amplifier. Toner deficiency or the like can be indicated with a few number or displays and/or indicators. Upon detection of toner deficiency or the like, the current copying cycle is completed first and the apparatus is stopped. The copying operation can be resumed after the toner deficiency or the like is eliminated.

A photoelectric conversion device comprises a photodiode comprising a metallic electrode formed of a metal capable of forming a Schottky junction together with amorphous silicon, such as Cr or Ni, a transparent electrode formed of ITO or the like, and an i-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer sandwiched in between the metallic electrode and the transparent electrode. A bias voltage is applied across the metallic electrode and the transparent electrode so that the metallic electrode is biased to a negative potential relative to the transparent electrode. A Schottky barrier formed in the interface between the metallic electrode and the i-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer is used as an electron blocking layer. Thus, the dark current is suppressed on a low level and the photoelectric conversion device is able to operate at a high S/N ratio.

An image-processing apparatus, can function as a copier and also as a printer, has first and second image-forming units, a switching unit and an output unit. When the first image-forming unit is selected by the switching unit, images are formed on a recording medium by the light from an original to be copied. When the second image-forming unit is selected, images are formed by controlling the transmission of light. The images formed on the recording medium are provided by the output unit.

An image processing apparatus for a copying machine with an ADF, a facsimile or a printer, has a platen for placing originals or documents thereon, an optical system for scanning the original image, an AE measurement circuit for measuring the intensity over the entire surface of the original, a document convey mechanism for feeding/ejecting the original to and from the exposure position, and a control section including a micro computer for controlling the operation sequence. An image of optimal intensity can be reproduced for any type of original including an original having both light and dark portions.

In an image forming apparatus including a copying machine having a sorter connected thereto, the copying machine is operated in selected one of book mode or sheet mode while the sorter is operated in selected one of sorter mode and collator mode. When the sheet mode is selected for the copying machine, a control unit selects the collator mode for the sorter, and when the book mode is selected for the copying operation, the control unit selects the sorter mode for the sorter. The copying machine monitors energization status of the sorter and if the sorter is deenergized, copy papers ejected from the copying machine are prevented from being fed to the sorter.
