A maleimide random copolymer contains an N-substituted compound structural unit, an unsaturated peroxycarbonate structural unit and optionally a vinyl monomer structural unit. In place of the unsaturated peroxycarbonate structural unit, an unsaturated peroxyester unit may be contained. A process for preparing a maleimide graft copolymer comprises polymerizing a mixture of an N-substituted maleimide compound and a vinyl monomer in the presence of a random vinyl copolymer containing peroxy groups with active oxygen content.

As N-substituted maleimide polymer composition contains 20 to 90 parts by weight of an N-substituted maleimide polymer and 80 to 10 parts by weight of a thermoplastic resin selected from a polycarbonate polymer, a polysulfone polymer, a polyphenylene ether polymer, a polyarylene sulfide polymer, and a modified polymer of the polymer or polymers, a polyoxymethylene polymer, a polyester polymer, a polyamide polymer and mixtures thereof.

N-substituted maleimide polymer composition

The maleimide copolymer of the invention is of the class of N-substituted maleimide copolymer such as N-alkyl or N-aromatic maleimide copolymer having peroxy bonds in a molecule, utilizable as a precursor for preparing a maleimide block copolymer and as a modifier for other resins. The maleimide block copolymer, which is useful as a molding material or a thermal resistance improver, is obtained by polymerizing maleimide monomers in the presence of a polymeric peroxide followed by polymerizing vinyl monomers.

A maleimide compound of high stability contains 5 to 70 wt. % of a maleimide compound represented by the formula of ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each stand for a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a methyl group, R.sub.3 stands for a straight-chained or branched alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a halogen-substituted straight-chained alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atom, a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms or an aryl or aralkyl group having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, 0.1 to 20 wt. % of a surfactant, 0.1 to 10 wt. % of a protective colloid and the balance of water.
