Provided is a composition capable of enhancing the effect of an antibody drug such as an immune checkpoint inhibitor, etc. A β-glucan is used as an active ingredient of a composition for enhancing the effect of an antibody drug. This composition is used suitably for antibody drugs that have an effect of suppressing growth of cancer via immune checkpoint inhibition; e.g., antibody drugs including a monoclonal antibody to PD-L1.

Disclosed is a highly effective macrophage phagocytosis-activating composition and/or composition promoting cytokine production in macrophages using an active component derived from natural products. A culture obtained by culturing microorganisms belonging to the genus(sp.) is used as the active component of the macrophage phagocytosis-activating composition and/or composition promoting cytokine production in macrophages. By means of the macrophage phagocytosis-activating composition and/or composition promoting cytokine production in macrophages, macrophage phagocytosis can be activated, and cytokine production in macrophages can be promoted. In particular, a macrophage phagocytosis-activating composition can activate the phagocytosis of cancer cells or cells damaged or destroyed by anticancer drugs.

It is intended to utilize &#x3b2;-glucan produced by a bacterium belonging tosp. From a bacterium belonging tosp., a mutant with little pigment accumulation is constructed by a mutagenesis means of, for example, irradiating with ultraviolet light or treating with a mutagen. A culture obtained by culturing this mutant in a liquid culture medium is usable as a composition with a large &#x3b2;-glucan content without showing any intense dark green color caused by the accumulation of melanin-like pigments. This composition may be taken as such as a functional food having the physiologically active functions of the &#x3b2;-glucan-containing composition. Alternatively, it may be added to foods, drinks. food additives, cosmetics and so on.
