A multifunctional apparatus comprises a main power board, electricity feed switching section, operating panel and control section. The main power board supplies electric power to a plurality of processing units. The electricity feed switching section allows a user to switch electricity feed status between the main power board and the respective processing units separately. The operating panel displays an icon depicting the apparatus and electricity feed status of the processing units of the apparatus. The control power supply unit includes an image forming unit for forming an image on a surface of a recording medium conveyed on the opposing electrode by applying prescribed potentials to respective ones of the plurality of electrodes and an electric field applying unit for applying an electric field of which electric field direction changes between the opposing electrode and the control electrode and which ensures that an electric force FE received by the toner adhered on the control electrode is greater than the attracting force Fc and that the force FE is smaller than the attracting force Fb.

An image forming apparatus capable of forming an image with uniform density includes a toner carrier for carrying a toner, an opposing electrode arranged opposing to the toner carrier, a high voltage power supply unit for supplying a voltage to generate a potential difference between the toner carrier and the opposing electrode, a control electrode including a plurality of electrodes arranged between the toner carrier and the opposing electrode, and a control power supply unit for implementing a plurality of potential states at respective ones of the electrodes of the control electrode, controlling passage of the toner through a passage portion, and for forming an image on a surface of a recording medium conveyed over the opposing electrode. The control electrode includes an insulating substrate, the aforementioned plurality of electrodes having a passage portion through which the toner passes provided in the insulating substrate, and a plurality of float electrodes having an opening provided such that at least part of the plurality of electrodes are directly or electrically exposed to the toner carrier, for making uniform an electric field formed between the toner carrier and the opposing electrode.

An image forming unit has a toner supplying section and a printing section, and directly forms an image with the developer, in accordance with the image signal, onto a sheet of paper as the recording medium. The control electrode has a shield electrode in which the positions of the openings, the applied voltage and the diameters of the openings are controlled so that the jumping of the toner passing through the gates can be controlled finely and uniformly without being affected by the distances from the toner support to the opposing electrode and control electrode. A doctor blade is provided in contact with frictionally charged toner in a toner tank, which regulates the amount of toner held on a toner holder. A charge control unit supplies to the doctor blade a voltage for selectively charging the toner. An electrostatic latent image is formed by the selectively charged toner. The object of the invention is to certainly remove and certainly recover the charged toner remaining on a developing roller after development. A single component toner which is delivered to the developing roller via a toner-supplying roller is made into a relatively thin layer of a predetermined thickness with a charging plate and is frictionally charged with a given quantity of electric charge. Subsequently, the toner is adhered on a photoreceptor drum along by the electrostatic latent image to develop an image at the developing region at which the developing roller comes into contact with the photoreceptor drum. After development, the electric charge of the toner layer on the developing roller is removed with an electric-charge-removing sheet. The toner after development is recovered into a toner hopper via the toner-supplying roller. In rotation direction of the developing roller, the relation of the width Wt of the toner layer to the width Wc of the electric-charge-removing sheet is established so as to be Wc.gtoreq.Wt. Thus, the electric charge of the toner layer on the developing roller is certainly removed.
