A storage system that functions as one or more logical volumes includes a control unit and a plurality of storage units connected to the control unit, wherein the control unit includes a memory that stores allocation status information that indicates status of allocation of the plurality of storage units to a logical volume; an access request responding unit that controls at least one storage unit among the plurality of storage units in response to a request for access to each logical volume from a host device; and a power saving controller that identifies an unused storage unit not allocated to any logical volume among the plurality of storage units on the basis of the allocation status information and performs power saving control on the identified unused storage unit.

The storage apparatus including includes a basic storage device having a control unit and an add-on storage device configured to be connected to the basic storage device. The operation stop processing unit determines the validity of the second operation stop request on the basis of a monitoring result obtained by the communication monitoring unit, and stops the operation of the add-on storage device.

A disk controller includes a determining unit for determining whether check codes added to data read from a disk drive are first type check codes or second type check codes, and a check code conversion unit. The check code conversion unit includes conversion unit for converting, if the check codes added to the read data are first type check codes, the first type check codes into second type check codes and a writing unit for writing the data provided with the second type check codes into the disk drive. The disk controller also includes a control unit for performing background processing, which is performed at a time different from processing performed when a data read request or a data write request is sent from a host device, by reading data provided with check codes from the disk drive and by starting check code conversion processing performed by the check code conversion unit.

In a storage system, a disk device performs recovery and transfers read data to a control device, and the control device judges the validity of the recovery to prevent a transfer of erroneous data. A control device read-accesses a disk device, and the disk device returns read data and a recovered read error response. A control device, at the time of an initial recovered read error, performs a retry of a similar command, and if an error does not occur for read commands including the retry read command, judges the data to be valid. Uncertain data (suspect data) upon occurrence of a recovered read error is restored through disk retry, and accurate read data can be transferred to the host.

A storage system accesses a storage device according to the host I/O request and internal I/O request for preventing a time out error of the host I/O due to a stagnation of command processing. The command processing section performs system load management, where the host I/O requests which are not managed by the storage system are managed according to the system load of the storage system, and for the host I/O requests which exceed the system load, the host I/O request is not processed but an error is replied, and the host retries the command to suppress the stagnation of command processing in the system.
