A conductive film () that covers the upper surface of a CF glass substrate () or the upper surface of a polarization plate () overlaid on the CF glass substrate is provided. The conductive film and a ground electrode () on a TFT glass substrate () are electrically connected with a conductive tape () having adherence. Then, a conductive paste (), () is adhered to a part so as to be placed on both the conductive tape and the conductive film, and is adhered to a part so as to be placed on both the conductive tape and the ground electrode. The conductive tape is provided with a length allowance such that the entire length is longer than the shortest distance between a connection part between the conductive tape and the conductive film and a connection part between the conductive tape and the ground electrode.

Consequently, the emission of uneven luminance or uneven color is prevented from occurring in boundary portions of each of the illumination areas.

A control circuit changes the ratio of an illumination period to a non-illumination period in a frame period of a backlight according to a gradation level in the one frame period of an image displayed on a liquid crystal panel in such a manner that the higher the gradation level, the backlight illumination control circuit increases the ratio of the illumination period to the non-illumination period in the frame period of the backlight, and the lower the gradation level, the backlight illumination control circuit decreases the ratio of the illumination period to the non-illumination period in the frame period of the backlight and thereby controls illumination intensity toward the liquid crystal panel. A time center of illumination intensity in each one frame period of the backlight is controlled in order that the time center exists in a constant temporal position from the beginning of each frame period.

A front-illuminating device of the present invention, which is placed over the entire surface of an object to be illuminated such as a reflection-type liquid crystal display device when it is used, is provided with a light source and a light-directing body. The light-directing body has an incident surface on which light from the light source (light-source light) is made incident, a first light-releasing surface for releasing the light toward the object to be illuminated, and a second light-releasing surface which faces the first light-releasing surface and releases reflected light from the object to be illuminated. The second light-releasing surface is formed into a step shape in which slanting portions and flat portions are alternately placed. The light source light, released from the first light-releasing surface to the object to be illuminated, is reflected by the object to be illuminated and the reflected light is allowed to reach the observer from the first light-releasing surface through the flat portions. In this case, among the light-source light rays, the light components progressing in parallel with the flat portions are reflected by the slanting portions and directed to the object to be illuminated. Consequently, the present invention makes it possible to provide a brighter front-illuminating device in which the efficiency of use of the light-source light is improved.

In certain example embodiments, the emitting surface is formed into a shape along the irradiated surface of the light-guiding member and the reflection surface is formed to be curved such that the reflected light is made approximately parallel seen from one direction upon reflecting the light from the light-emitting device.

Adhesive layers are formed on the two opposing surfaces of a transparent support. At least one of the adhesive layers is made of a material of which the cured state may be changed. The adhesive layer is irradiated with light and a lens sheet is then pressed against the adhesive layer. The adhesive layer is cured. Liquid crystal display apparatus and electronic device incorporating the same

Featured are a front-illuminating device including a light source and first and second light-directing bodies. The first light-directing body is disposed in front of an object to be illuminated and has a first light-releasing surface from which light is released to the object to be illuminated and a second light-releasing surface, placed face to face with the first light-releasing surface, for releasing light reflected from the object to be illuminated. The second light-releasing surface also is formed into a step shape and includes slanting portions that reflect light mainly from the light source toward the first light-releasing surface. The second light-directing body is disposed between the first light-directing body and the object to be illuminated and is configured and arranged so a distance from each of the slanting portions to the surface of the second light-directing body second surface is essentially uniform.

Adhesive layers are formed on the two opposing surfaces of a transparent support. At least one of the adhesive layers is made of a material of which the cured state changes by application of external force, such as a photocurable resin. A separator on the adhesive layer is peeled off, and the adhesive layer is irradiated with light. A lens sheet is then pressed against the adhesive layer. The adhesive layer is cured to a degree of hardness with which the adhesion state between lens sheet and the adhesive layer no more changes. In this way, a laminate film of the lens sheet fixed to the transparent support via the adhesive layer is obtained. The laminate film is bonded to a polarizing plate on the viewer's side of a liquid crystal display element via the other adhesive layer.

A reflective type LCD is provided with a front-light. The front light includes an optical film provided on the large face of a lightguide which faces the liquid crystal display device. A two dimensional area defined by the optical film is greater than a two dimensional area defined by a window formed in the protection member, but less than a two dimensional area defined by the lightguide, so that at least a portion of a peripheral edge of the optical film is located between the end face of the window and the end face of the light guide as viewed from a front of the LCD apparatus.
