A developing device includes a storage portion, a developer carrying member, a stirring portion, a layer thickness restricting portion, and a guide portion. The guide portion is disposed between the stirring portion and the layer thickness restricting portion. The stirring portion faces the developer carrying member with a first gap between them. The layer thickness restricting portion faces the developer carrying member with a second gap between them. The guide portion includes a first guide surface and a second guide surface. On the first guide surface, convex portions or concave portions are formed. The first guide surface faces the stirring portion with, between them, a third gap that is a passage through which the developer passes toward the first gap. The second guide surface faces the developer carrying member with, between them, a fourth gap that is a passage through which the developer passes toward the second gap.

An image forming apparatus includes an image carrier, a developing device, a bias applying unit, a leak detecting unit, a bias controller and a leak detection controller. The developing device includes a magnetic roller and a developer layer. The bias applying unit applies development biases to the magnetic roller and the developing roller. The leak detecting unit detects a leak generated between the image carrier and the developing roller or a leak generated between the developing roller and the magnetic roller. The leak detection controller performs a leak detecting operation for detecting the value of an inter-peak voltage of the alternating current voltage of the development bias applied to the developing roller, at which the leak is generated, while changing the inter-peak voltage at a time different from that during the developing operation.

In an image forming apparatus, a case containing a developer includes a first storage storing developer information indicating a composition of the developer. A developing part receives the developer from the developer-containing case. An acquiring part acquires the developer information in the first storage, when the developer-containing case is installed to an installed part. A decision part decides whether or not a composition of the developer in existing developer information in a second storage is different from another composition of the developer in newly acquired developer information. An electric charge amount measuring part measures an electric charge amount of the developer in the developing part. A developer replacement controlling part controls discharge and replenishment of the developer in the developing part on the basis of the measured electric charge amount, when the decision part decides that both compositions are different.

A developer includes a developer carrying body that carries a two-component developer having a magnetic toner and a carrier. A toner carrying body opposes the developer carrying body and receives toner from the developer carrying body. An image carrying body develops an electrostatic latent image by toner carried on the toner carrying body. A first magnetic member is inside the developer carrying body and opposes a surface of the toner carrying body. A second magnetic member is inside the toner carrying body and opposes the surface of the developer carrying body. A developing unit has a voltage-applicator () to apply a developing bias voltage to a developing roller (). The voltage-applicator () applies the developing bias voltage for a first duration to apply an AC voltage having a rectangular waveform, and a second duration to stop applying the AC voltage. The AC voltage has a duty ratio of 50% or more in a direction for causing toner to develop an electrostatic latent image. The number of cycles of the AC voltage in the first duration is two or more, and the AC voltage has a voltage in a direction for pulling the toner back to the developing roller, just before transition to the second duration. The developing unit suppresses occurrence of image unevenness due to a fluctuation in developing gap. Thus, an image forming apparatus equipped with the developing unit forms a high-quality image while suppressing image unevenness.

A developing device uses a two-component developer including at least carriers and toners. The toners are supplied to an image bearing member bearing an electrostatic latent image so that a toner image is developed from the electrostatic latent image. The developing device has a developing roller arranged to oppose the image bearing member; and a magnetic roller arranged to oppose the developing roller. The magnetic roller retains the two-component developer to supply toners to the developing roller.
