A display device including a pair of opposed substrates at least one of which is transparent with a display medium layer therebetween, and a transparent electrode arranged on the internal surface of the transparent substrate is provided. The thickness of the transparent electrode is about ((5500.times.N)/(2.times.n)).ANG. wherein N is a natural number and n represents the refractive index thereof. When a transparent insulating film is formed on the transparent electrode, the thickness of the transparent insulating film is about ((5500.times.N)/(2.times.m)).ANG. wherein N is a natural number and m represents the refractive index thereof. When the refractive index of n.sub.1 of the transparent insulating film is substantially equal to the refractive index n.sub.2 of the transparent electrode, the value, 2.times.(n.sub.1 .times.d.sub.1 +n.sub.2 .times.d.sub.2) equals about (5500.times.N).ANG. wherein N is a natural number, d.sub.1 represents the thickness of the transparent insulating film and d.sub.2 the thickness of the transparent electrode.

The present invention provides an improved positive type liquid crystal display device in the birefringence mode, wherein at least one of the polarizers is a colored polarizer including the character of making the background color of the display approximately white, thereby improving the contrast ratio extremely. Further, in the negative type liquid crystal display device, a color filter for absorbing the light of the wavelength area which transmits at the time of an off state and non-selecting, is provided in series with respect to a light source and the liquid crystal display portion, thereby preventing the color shading of the background color.

When the refractive index of n.sub.1 of the transparent insulating film is substantially equal to the refractive index n.sub.2 of the transparent electrode, the value, 2.times.(n.sub.1 .times.d.sub.1 +n.sub.2 .times.d.sub.2) equals about 5500.ANG. wherein d.sub.1 represents the thickness of the transparent insulating film and d.sub.2 the thickness of the transparent electrode.

An optical panel having superior environment resisting properties is provided. An increase in electrical resistance is prevented by heat treating the electrode in a vacuum at a temperature between about 200.degree. and 600.degree. C. Electrolytic corrosion resistance of the panel is provided by coating at least the non-conductive portions of the terminal portions of the panel with a water-repellant material.

A liquid crystal display panel having uniform cell thickness is composed of a first substrate and a second opposed substrate where each substrate has cooperating electrodes selectively disposed on the interior surfaces thereof. At least one of the substrates is a laminate of two flexible plastic films and a polarizing film therebetween. The plastic films have different thermal expansion coefficients, with the thermal expansion coefficient of the film on the interior surface being less than the thermal expansion coefficient of the film on the opposed substrate so that the center of the substrate is biased convexly towards the opposed substrate. Substantially rigid spacer members are disposed between the substrates. Adhesive substances are disposed about the periphery of the substrates for coupling the substrates and maintaining the display panel assembled. The at least one substrate is a laminate biased against the spacer members for maintaining uniform thickness across the display panel.
