In a navigation apparatus having a cradle unit that is fastenable to a vehicle and is equipped with at least a microcomputer; and a front panel unit that is attachable to and detachable from the cradle unit and is equipped with at least a display displaying map data and a microcomputer performing a navigation function to indicate a determined location of the vehicle on the map data, it is configured such that a panel is integrally formed at bottom of the cradle unit to be attachable to the vehicle. With this, it becomes possible to provide the navigation apparatus configured such that a member having a microcomputer performing a navigation function is attachable/detachable to/from the main body, i.e., the base unit, thereby improving ease of use, that the member can be easily attached to the dashboard of the vehicle, and that unnatural impression is prevented from arising in the appearance.

Accordingly, it is easy for an operator to understand operational steps, thereby effectively preventing an erroneous operation due to the operator's misunderstanding. A navigation apparatus includes a base unit fastenable to a dashboard at a driver's seat of a vehicle, a front panel unit attachable to and detachable from the base unit and with a display displaying map data, and a microcomputer adapted to perform a navigation function to indicate a determined location of the vehicle on the map data. The navigation apparatus is configured such that a part of the front panel unit projects from a surface of the dashboard toward a user seated in the driver's seat, as viewed from side, when the front panel unit is attached to the base unit. With this, the degree of freedom of front panel unit attachment/detachment with respect to the base unit is improved without sacrificing the appearance of the navigation apparatus.

The system has a robot controller for controlling the motion of the robot such that it walks in accordance with a predetermined gait and an emergency stop controller including an acoustic sensor (microphone). The robot operator and persons in a robot's working environment are provided with a whistle and blows it when the robot is likely to collide with them or objects. The sensor picks up the signal to pass it to a band-filter so as a frequency components of 400 Hz is passed to a later stage made up of a microcomputer. In the microcomputer, it is first checked if the signal is larger than a first reference level at an interval and a counter value is incremented if the result of checking is affirmative. Then the counter value is compared with a second reference value and if it exceeds the second reference value, the robot is ascertained to be in a stable attitude. If it is ascertained to be stable, the robot is driven to stop its locomotion.

An apparatus for controlling ignition timing in an internal combustion engine determines the amount of adjustment of ignition timing for preventing knocking with reference to the engine operating state. The amount of adjustment of the ignition timing carried out upon the detection of knocking is varied depending on the engine speed. Specifically, it is made large in the low speed region where the interval between successive firings is relatively long, thus increasing the speed with which knocking can be prevented and enhancing the protection of the engine from damage in this operating region. Also, rapid acceleration and other transient engine operating states are detected and a transient state adjustment is calculated separately of the adjustment amount for knocking prevention. The transient state adjustment is added to the knocking prevention adjustment and the result is used for retarding the ignition timing, whereby knocking can be effectively prevented during rapid acceleration. Further, after knocking has been prevented, the ignition timing is advanced with consideration given to reference knocking occurrence frequencies set independently for different engine operating conditions. Thus, the knocking occurrence frequency can be maintained at a fixed level irrespective of the engine operating condition, whereby the engine output can be optimized.
