An interior finish member having a door for an air bag includes a main body and a cover. The main body surrounds the periphery of the cover, and the main body and the cover form a continuous surface. The cover covers a folded air bag. The cover includes: a door, which covers the folded air bag. A breakable portion is defined by a recessed periphery of the door and is relatively thin. A hinge connects the door with the main body and provides a pivot around which the door pivots under a force of an expanding air bag. The main body is made of thermoplastic resin, and the cover is made of thermoplastic elastomer. The main body and the cover portion can be integrally formed.

An air bag cover having a surface sheet including a thermoplastic elastomer decorative layer on the surface side. The breaking elongation and break strength of the thermoplastic elastomer decorative layer is adjusted utilizing a filler powder. An interior finish member having a door suitable for an air bag comprises a main body and a cover portion. The main body surrounds the periphery of the cover portion, and the main body and the cover portion form a continuous surface. The cover portion covers a folded air bag of an air bag device. The cover portion comprises: a door portion which covers the folded air bag; a breakable portion defined by a recessed periphery of the door portion whose thickness is thinner than adjacent portions of the interior finish member so that it may be broken easily in deployment of the air bag; and a hinge portion for connecting the door portion with the main body and for providing a pivot around which the door portion rotates when the door portion opens under a force of an expanding air bag. The main body is made of thermoplastic resin, and the cover portion is made of thermoplastic elastomer. Because they are capable of thermally fusing with each other, the main body and the cover portion can be integrally formed.

An air bag cover is made of thermoplastic resin and covers an air bag. A plurality of holes are provided with the air bag cover continuously and a breakable portion is provided which severs upon the inflation of the air bag. The surface side of the breakable portion is processed by a heating process, so that protrusions which partially plug the holes are formed on the inner circumferential surface of the holes on the surface side.

Air bag cover and manufacturing method thereof

A molded article, useful as an interior part of a motor vehicle, is described. The molded article is formed by injecting a synthetic resin material as a base layer into a mold wherein a synthetic resin film has been placed in close contact with a wall of the mold. The base layer is composed of acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene copolymer or denatured acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene copolymer which is obtained by dispersing butadiene rubber particles within a matrix of acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer or denatured acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer. The acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer or denatured acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer matrix has a molecular weight distribution which is greater than 2.18 and less than 3.05.
