This invention provides a polymerizable liquid crystal compound having a large value of &Dgr;n/n, excellent in coating properties on an alignment film and easily aligned. Disclosed is a polymerizable liquid crystal compound having at least one polymerizable reactive group and showing nematic liquid crystal properties, having a &Dgr;n/n value of 0.14 or more wherein n is average refractive index and &Dgr;n is extraordinary light refractive index (ne) minus ordinary light refractive index (no), and being aligned by application onto an alignment film.

The invention has an object of safely and simply preparing a large amount of a ruthenium metathesis catalyst, which is used as a catalyst for a carbon-carbon bond formation using, particularly, a metathesis reaction. The metathesis catalyst has the following complex composition (A) or (B). The composition (A) includes RuX,(arene)(PR,R,R,) and R,CHX,, R,C &equiv;CH or R,CHX,and a reducing agent, wherein X,and X,respectively are a halogen atom; arene is a hydrocarbon having a benzene ring; R,, R,and R,, which may be the same or different, respectively are an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3-8 carbon atoms or an optionally substituted aryl group, wherein the substituent group is an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having 1-8 carbon atoms, an alkylamino group having 1-8 carbon atoms or a halogen atom; R,is an alkyl group which has 1-8 carbon atoms and may have an ether bond or an ester bond, an optionally subsituted aryl group, wherein the substituent group is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl group; or cycloalkyl group having 3-8 carbon atoms; and R,is an optionally substituted alkyl group which has 1-8 carbon atoms and may have an ether bond or an ester bond, wherein the substituent group is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl group, an aryl group or a cycloalkyl group having 3-8 carbon atoms. The composition B includes &lsqb;RuX,(arene)&rsqb;,, PR,R,R,, R,C&equiv;CH or R,CHX,and a reducing agent, wherein X,, arene, R,, R,, R,, R,and R,are the same as defined above.

The composition B includes &lsqb;RuX,(arene)&rsqb;,, PR,R,R,, R,C&equiv;CH or R,CHX,and a reducing agent, wherein X,, arene, R,, R,, R,, R,and R,are the same as defined above.

An optically active compound which itself generally exhibits no antiferroelectric liquid crystal phase, but which can be added to an antiferroelectric liquid crystal or composition thereof having a high threshold voltage to reduce the threshold voltage of the resulting composition. An antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkyl group having 6 to 16 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 represents a straight chain alkyl group having 3 to 8 carbon atoms or a branched alkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms; and * means an asymmetric carbon atom, and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprising at least one liquid crystal compound as defined above. The optically active compound of the present invention is highly miscible with a number of known antiferroelectric liquid crystal compounds and thus capable of providing liquid crystal materials having improved temperature properties. A liquid crystal composition containing the optically active compound of the present invention is applicable to electro-optical devices with the use of antiferroelectric liquid crystals.
