The plasma display device comprises a plasma display panel forming discharge cells at intersections between data electrodes (D-Dm) and both of scanning electrodes (SCN-SCNn) and sustain electrodes (SUS-SUSn), and a scanning electrode drive circuit for applying a specified voltage to the scanning electrodes (SCN-SCNn), in which the scanning electrode drive circuit includes a scanning circuit connected to the scanning electrodes (SCN-SCNn), an initializing circuit connected to the scanning circuit for generating an initializing waveform, and a sustain circuit connected to the scanning circuit for generating a sustain pulse, and is characterized by issuing a drive waveform in a lapse of specified time after turning on the power.

Plasma display device

A plasma display device which includes sustain circuit boards containing switching element-switching element. Respective sustain circuit boards are provided with a first wiring pattern for driving current, and a second wiring pattern in which the driving current proceeds in a direction that is opposite to that in the first wiring pattern. The above-described structure reduces parasitic inductance, and the voltage waveform to be applied on the plasma display device's panel will have reduced ringing phenomenon.

An AC plasma display device includes a pair of spaced apart first and second plates. The first plate bears electrodes each extending in a first direction, and the second plate bears paired first and second electrodes each extending in another direction perpendicular to the first direction. The paired first and second electrodes are divided into several groups. Further, the device includes first connecting lines connected to each other, each of which is associated with the first electrodes in one of the groups. Also provided are second connecting lines connected to each other, each of which is associated with the second electrodes in one of the groups. In addition, the device includes first pulse generators, each of which is associated with one of the first connecting lines and second pulse generators, each of which is associated with one of the second connecting lines.

AC plasma display device

A method of driving an AC plasma display panel is provided, in which plural pairs of a scanning electrode and a sustain electrode covered with a dielectric layer and a plurality of data electrodes are arranged orthogonal to and opposing each other with a discharge space being sandwiched therebetween. The method includes an initialization period for applying, to the scanning electrode, an initialization waveform of a ramp voltage and a write period for applying, to the scanning electrode, a scanning waveform with a polarity opposite to that of the initialization waveform sequentially and at the same time applying, to the selected data electrodes, a data waveform with the same polarity as that of the initialization waveform. The potential of the scanning electrode to which the scanning waveform is being applied is set to be lower than that of the scanning electrode at the end of the application of the initialization waveform. In addition, the potential of the sustain electrode during the application of the scanning waveform is set to be lower than that of the sustain electrode at the end of the application of the initialization waveform.

Method of driving AC plasma display panel

A method of driving an AC plasma display panel for carrying out gray-scale display using a structure in which each field consists of a plurality of subfields, each of which includes an initialization period, a write period, and a sustain period. At least in one predetermined subfield out of the plurality of subfields, at least a part of a sustain operation in the sustain period and at least a part of an initialization operation in the initialization period in a subsequent subfield are carried out at the same time. The visibility of black is improved considerably and the contrast can be enhanced greatly.

In a method of driving an AC-type plasma display panel in which a first insulation substrate and a second insulation substrate are disposed so as to be opposed to each other, pairs of scanning electrodes and sustaining electrodes covered with a dielectric layer and a protective layer are arranged on the first insulation substrate and at least data electrodes are arranged on the second insulation substrate so as to be orthogonal to the pairs of scanning and sustaining electrodes, immediately after termination of application of a sustaining pulse voltage to one of the scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes, the sustaining pulse voltage is applied to the other.

Method for driving AC-type plasma display panel

In a plasma display device having a three-dimensional matrix wiring arrangement of anodes, cathodes and address electrodes, writing discharge is caused between anodes and address electrodes to temporarily store writing charge on a dielectric layer, and the writing charge is discharged as an auxiliary discharge by applying a sustaining voltage to the cathodes, thereby inducing main discharge between the anodes and the cathodes.

Plasma display device and method for driving the same

A plurality of scanning electrodes and a plurality of sustaining electrodes parallel to each other are located on an inner face of a first glass substrate. Each of the scanning electrodes and each of the sustaining electrodes form a pair. A dielectric layer and a protection layer are formed on the first glass substrate in this order, covering the electrodes. A plurality of data electrodes perpendicular to the scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes are located on an inner face of a second glass substrate which is located opposed to the first glass substrate with a discharge space interposed therebetween. In an AC-type PDP having such a structure, at least one of the plurality of scanning electrodes and the plurality of sustaining electrodes are divided into a plurality of groups, and pulses having different phases are applied to the electrodes in different groups, thereby causing sustaining discharge. The scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes may be comb-like with teeth. The comb-like scanning electrodes and the comb-like sustaining electrodes are opposed to each other with a small gap interposed therebetween in the manner that the teeth thereof are in engagement with each other. In such a case, the data electrodes are located opposed to and in a longitudinal direction of the teeth of the scanning electrodes.

Gas discharge display apparatus and method for driving the same

The plasma display panel having brightness display ranges comprising a gradation brightness display range which displays gradation brightness corresponding to the input signals under a preset input signal level and a constant brightness display range which displays a constant peak brightness greater than the maximum brightness corresponding to input signals greater than the preset input signal level. The plasma display panel can provide the gradation display up to the maximum brightness corresponding to the input signals up to the maximum input and provide the constant peak brightness corresponding to the peak level input by adding one additional weighting bit for the higher gradation. Consequently, a high quality brightness display with high mean value of the brightness and sufficiently high peak brightness can be achieved. Furthermore, the plasma display panel enhances the brightness weighting value and the value of .gamma. for the reverse .gamma. correction when the input signals go over the preset value and decrease the values to the original values when the input signals drop below the preset value. The plasma display panel can provide the gradation display up to the maximum brightness corresponding to the input signals up to the maximum input signal and provide the gradation display up to the peak brightness greater than the maximum brightness corresponding to the input signals over the maximum input signal. Consequently, high quality display with high brightness and high contrast without exceeding the maximum permissible power consumption can be achieved.

A plurality of filaments are stretched in parallel on a rear plate, and an insulating plate is provided so as to cover the filaments. In the insulating plate, a plurality of through-holes are formed along the longitudinal direction of the respective filaments for exposing parts thereof. Each through-hole and phosphor layers, which are provided on the insulating layer adjacent to the through-hole, constitute one unit picture element. The respective phosphor layers in the respective picture element are installed in a plurality of cavities formed in a rib provided on a lower surface of the insulating plate, whereby separated from the neighboring phosphor layers. The respective cavities function as a discharge room, with a light-transmissive front plate, formed on the rib, as a lid and a portion of the insulating plate corresponding to the phosphor layer as a bottom. The respective discharge rooms overlap the through-hole at one end in the longitudinal direction thereof. A part of the filaments is exposed to the discharge room via the through-hole so as to act as a cathode. In addition, an anode exists respectively at the other end of the respective discharge rooms.
