A belt drive device for an image forming apparatus includes a belt, a roller, a roller drive member, a state detector and a controller. The roller drive member drives the roller that entrains the belt. The state detector detects a state of the belt. The controller identifies a specific portion of the belt based on the state detected by the state detector, and controls the roller drive member to stop the belt so that the specific portion lies at a predetermined position.

An image forming apparatus includes a first image supporting member for forming a first image; a second image supporting member arranged adjacent to the first image supporting member for forming a second image; a first drive unit for driving the first image supporting member through a first driving force having a first phase; a second drive unit for driving the second image supporting member through a second driving force having a second phase shifted from the first phase; and a transfer unit for transferring the first image and the second image to a printing medium.

An image forming apparatus includes a control mechanism capable of selecting a plurality of print modes and a fixing device fixing an image developed based on one of the print modes selected by the control mechanism. The control mechanism selects any one of the print modes based on a successive print sheet number determined by print information received from a host device and a power consumption amount of each of the print modes calculated from fixing temperature of the fixing device prior to starting print operation.

An electrophotographic printer has neutralizing units and a fixing unit that are disposed in the transport path of a print medium. The neutralizing units neutralize a toner image surface of the print medium entering the fixing unit and a non-printed surface of the print medium exiting the fixing unit. The fixing unit includes two rollers. A fixing roller incorporates a heat source that generates heat for fusing a toner image on the print medium. A pressure roller is in pressure engagement with the fixing roller. At least one of the fixing roller and pressure roller includes a resilient member that covers a metal shaft and an insulation layer that covers the resilient member. The resilient member may contain electrically conductive whiskers that extend radially in three dimensions. The whiskers are dispersed such that a surface of the insulation layer and a surface of the shaft are electrically continuous.
