An air supplying process supplies air to the filter through an air supply passage by driving an air pump. An oxygen supplying process supplies oxygen to the filter through the exhaust passage, the oxygen having been passed through a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A reducing process sets an air supply amount per unit time in the air supplying process obtained when the oxygen supplying process and the air supplying process are simultaneously executed to be lower than the air supply amount per unit time in the air supplying process obtained when the oxygen supplying process and the air supplying process are not simultaneously executed.

An engine system includes an engine including first and second cylinders, a catalyst provided in an exhaust passage of the engine, and a control device for the engine. An ENG-ECU performs a specific cylinder fuel cutoff process of stopping combustion of an air-fuel mixture in some cylinders out of a plurality of cylinders of an internal combustion engine and a transmission process of transmitting engine operation information on execution of the specific cylinder fuel cutoff process to an HV-ECU. The HV-ECU performs a torque compensation process of compensating for a decrease in engine torque due to execution of the specific cylinder fuel cutoff process using an output torque of a second MG based on the received engine operation information. The ENG-ECU performs a process of starting the specific cylinder fuel cutoff process in a combustion cycle when a waiting time which includes a time until the HV-ECU receives the engine operation information has elapsed after the transmission process has been performed.

The control device includes an electronic control unit executing a temperature raising process of raising the temperature of the post-processing device and a recovery-time process. The temperature raising process includes a stopping process and a rich process. In the stopping process, supply of fuel to several of cylinders is stopped. In the rich process, the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture for different ones of the cylinders other than the several cylinders is made lower than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. In the recovery-time process, the concentration of unburned fuel in exhaust gas discharged to the exhaust passage is made higher than an equivalent concentration, when the temperature raising process is stopped. The equivalent concentration is the concentration of unburned fuel being just enough to react with oxygen in the exhaust gas.

When an amount of particulate matter (PM) collected by a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) reaches a predetermined amount, a central processing unit (CPU) executes a regeneration process for regenerating the GPF. That is, the CPU stops supply of fuel to any one of cylinders #1 to #4, while increasing an amount of fuel supplied to remaining cylinders. When a temperature of a three-way catalyst becomes equal to or higher than a first temperature, the CPU increases an injection amount to lower a temperature of exhaust gas. When the temperature of the three-way catalyst becomes equal to or higher than the first temperature during the execution of the regeneration process, the CPU does not increase the injection amount.

A controller executes a fuel introduction process when stopping combustion in a cylinder under a situation in which a crankshaft is rotating. The fuel introduction process causes a fuel injection valve to inject fuel and causes the fuel to flow out unburned from inside the cylinder to an exhaust passage. The opening degree of an exhaust gas recirculation valve at a point in time when a state in which the execution condition of the fuel introduction process is not satisfied is switched to a state in which the execution condition of the fuel introduction process is satisfied is a preliminary opening degree. During the execution of the fuel introduction process, the recirculation valve controlling section causes the opening degree of the exhaust gas recirculation valve to be smaller than the preliminary opening degree.

A CPU of a control device is configured to perform a specific cylinder fuel cutoff process of causing an internal combustion engine to operate such that supply of fuel to some cylinders out of a plurality of cylinders is stopped and supply of fuel to the other cylinders is maintained and a fastening force decreasing process of decreasing a fastening force of a lockup clutch of a torque converter. The CPU gradually increases a ratio of the increase amount to the base injection amount, at the start of the temperature raising process.
