A polarizable electrode ( ) includes an activated carbon/carbon composite consisting essentially of an activated carbon component and a carbon component. The activated carbon component includes activated carbon powder or fiber. The carbon component is produced by carbonizing a thermosetting resin. The composite has a density within a range between 0.70 and 0.85 g/cm , both inclusive, and a thickness within another range between 0.7 and 3.0 cm, both inclusive.

Method of producing a polarizable electrode

A unitary-formed electrode structure serving as both a collector and a polarization electrode includes an electrically conductive base serving as the collector, and a polarization electrode that includes a multiplicity of separate polarization particles dispersed throughout the base and exposed in at least a part of a surface of the base.

Electric double layer capacitor and method of forming the same

A method for fabricating an electric double-layer capacitor includes the steps of contacting a polarized electrode which includes a polymer having no bridge structure therein and activated carbon and a collector which includes a polymer and conductive additives, exposing the polarized electrode and the collector to electron beam to form a bridge structure therebetween. The electric double-layer capacitor having the polarized electrode and the collector thus formed has a low equivalent serial resistance and can be manufactured with a higher throughput.

Method for manufacturing a polarized electrode for an electric double-layer capacitor

To reduce a disparity of voltage between each unit electrical double layer capacitor without an electrical loss when a plurality of the unit electrical double layer capacitors are connected in series to provide an electrical double layer capacitor, a switching element is connected in parallel to each unit electrical double layer capacitor to be individually short-circuited during discharging of the electrical double layer capacitor.

A D.C. motor-generator and an electric double layer capacitor are fixedly connected directly to each other and a rotary shaft of the motor-generator is rotated in one direction by an external force to generate D.C. electric energy which is stored in the electric double layer capacitor. By supplying the electric energy from the electric double layer capacitor to the D.C. motor-generator, the stored electric energy can be discharged as mechanical rotation energy. By deriving the stored energy as electric energy, an emergency power source can be provided.

A conductive rubber film having a volume resistivity in the direction perpendicular to the film surface of 0.1-5 .OMEGA.cm is obtained by blending 100 parts by weight of a rubber component comprising rubber with an iodine value of 30 or less (e.g. hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene copolymer rubber) with 5 to 100 parts by weight of conductive carbon having a specific surface area of 20 to 2000 m.sup.2 /g, and forming the blend into a film of 0.01-0.2 mm thick by casting by the use of a solvent (e.g. methyl isobutyl ketone). The film is made into collectors and an electric double layer capacitor using an aqueous electrolyte is produced by using the collectors. This capacitor has a low internal resistance, namely, it can be obtained as a high-output capacitor.

The invention provides a polarizable electrode composed of activated carbon/carbon composite having micropores among which micropores having a diameter ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 micrometers have a volume ranging from 0.1 to 1.2 cm.sup.3 /g. The composite further has a specific surface area equal to or greater than 1000 m.sup.2 /g, and a density equal to or greater than 0.5 g/cm.sup.3. The micropores having a diameter of micrometers order to be formed in the polarizable electrode in accordance with the invention, facilitate the movement of ions in the electrode. Thus, it is possible to accomplish a polarizable electrode suitable for a larger amount of current discharge.

Polarizable electrode

An electric double layer capacitor is proposed which is constructed by sandwiching a laminated body of a pair of polarizable electrodes consisting of a porous solid conductive material each impregnated with an electrolytic solution and a platelike ion permeating separator member, between a pair of collectors for external connection terminals, and housing the aggregate in a gasket, wherein the gap between the inner surface of the gasket and the outer surface of the laminated body is filled with an auxiliary electrolytic solution. The auxiliary electrolytic solution consists of glass fibers or water absorbing polymer impregnated with gelatinous electrolytic solution or a liquid electrolytic solution, and replenishes the lost portion due to evaporation and leakage of the electrolytic solution of the electric double layer capacitor. Moreover, this auxiliary electrolytic solution acts as a buffer to mechanical impact externally applied to the capacitor. Therefore, the electric double layer capacitor according to this invention has excellent resistance to high temperature and resistance to impact.
