A transmitting liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal panel including a pair of substrates, a pair of polarizers arranged adjacent to the pair of substrates respectively, a liquid crystal layer held between the pair of substrates, and electrodes arranged on at least one of the pair of substrates and serving to apply an electric field to the liquid crystal layer; and a light source unit arranged external to the pair of substrates, in which each of the pair of polarizers has an absorption axis along with an extraordinary wave axis of molecules constituting the polarizers. In this apparatus, a dye layer having a disc-form molecular structure is arranged between the polarizer and the substrate, or adjacent to the polarizer in proximity to the viewer. The dye layer has a transmission axis along with the extraordinary wave axis of the disc-form molecular structure.

Active matrix type liquid crystal display apparatus with complementary polarizer

A liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal layer which contains a liquid crystal composition; a pair of substrates opposed to each other across the liquid crystal layer; alignment layers placed on liquid crystal layer sides of the pair of substrates, respectively; and polarization plates placed on opposite sides from the liquid crystal layer sides, respectively. The pair of substrates includes a thin-film transistor substrate including a thin-film transistor for controlling molecule alignment of the liquid crystal composition, and a color filter substrate including a color layer containing pixels of different colors. A blue pixel, which is one of the pixels of different colors, is larger in area than any of the pixels of other colors. A loss of light in a short-wavelength range is thus reduced.

Liquid crystal display device

Manufacture of a liquid crystal display is disclosed. The liquid crystal display includes a backlight unit, a backlight unit-side polarizing plate, and a liquid crystal cell held by two glass plates, the liquid crystal cell having an electrode, a liquid crystal layer, an alignment layer, and a color filter arranged between the glass plates. The liquid crystal display also includes a transparent front plate arranged at a side of the liquid crystal cell opposite to the backlight unit, a polarizing plate attached to the liquid crystal cell, and a transparent organic medium layer arranged between the front plate and the liquid crystal cell. Since the front plate is provided at the outermost surface of an image display portion, and the transparent organic medium is filled between the front plate and the liquid crystal module, it is possible to achieve an improvement in wear resistance and a reduction in reflectance.

Provided is a liquid crystal display device, in which a pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal layer () is smaller than 2&#xb0; and a first optically anisotropic layer () is formed between a first polarizing plate () and the first substrate (). When a polar angle of the first optically anisotropic layer with respect to an in-plane vertical direction is denoted by &#x3c6;, the first optically anisotropic layer compensates for a polarized state of light having a wavelength of 550 nm that enters the first optically anisotropic layer, the first optically anisotropic layer has a dichroic maximum value in a range of 430 nm or larger and 470 nm or smaller and has a dichroic maximum value in a range of 600 nm or larger and 650 nm or smaller when &#x3c6;&#x2260;0 is satisfied.

Liquid crystal panel and liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a white color light source and a coloring light source, a detection circuit which detects a brightness of an input image signal, an image quality processing calculation circuit, a light source control circuit, and an image control circuit. The coloring light source includes a blue light source. The image quality processing calculation circuit outputs to the light source control circuit a light source control signal for (1) increasing a light intensity of the coloring light source when an average luminance of the input image signal is detected to be higher than a predetermined luminance based on a detection result of the detection circuit, and for (2) turning-on only the white color light source without turning-on the coloring light source when the average luminance of the input image signal is detected to be lower than the predetermined luminance.

Liquid crystal display apparatus capable of maintaining high color purity

Provided is a liquid crystal display apparatus including: a liquid crystal panel including a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched by the pair of substrates; plural electrodes formed on at least one of the pair of substrates; and a pair of polarizers provided in respective outsides of the pair of substrates; and a back light unit provided in a rear of the liquid crystal panel, in which one of the pair of polarizers, which is provided at a side of the back light unit, includes at least two types of layers which cause polarization, and in which the two types of layers include a first layer provided on a side of the liquid crystal layer and a second layer provided on a side of the back light unit, the first layer being a negative uniaxial polarizer layer, the second layer being a positive uniaxial polarizer layer.

Provided is a backlit liquid crystal display apparatus having one pixel unit comprising RGB three primary color regions and a white region or a region having low color concentration, so that high brightness can be compatible with color purity. A pixel unit comprises RGB main pixels and G/R sub-pixels. In a lower gray scale, color purity has priority in display with main pixels, while in a higher gray scale, color purity has priority in display with main and sub-pixels, whereby high brightness can be compatible with color purity. Sub-pixels may be consisted only by green sub-pixels.

The first or the second polarizer includes a polarization layer and supporting materials located on both sides of the polarization layer, reducing light leakage and a color shift in a black display state when viewed from the oblique direction.

Polarizer and liquid-crystal display apparatus having reduced polarization state in oblique viewing angles

A liquid crystal display includes a pair of substrates having a polarizer, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the substrates of the pair, a color filter layer sandwiched between one of the substrates of the pair and the liquid crystal layer, a light source for supplying light to the pair of substrates, the liquid crystal layer, and the color filter layer. The color filter layer includes three filters for displaying blue, green and red. Only the green filter of the three filters selectively includes an absorbing component capable of absorbing a light spectrum within a wavelength range from 480 nm to 500 nm.

A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first polarizer located on one side of a first substrate, a second polarizer located on the opposite side of a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer formed of liquid crystal molecules and between the first and the second substrates so that the liquid crystal molecules may be aligned in parallel to the first or the second substrate and to which an electric field is applied in parallel to the first substrate, and a lighting device. A liquid crystal display device includes a four-color conversion circuit with no chromatic changes in which the chromaticity and luminance of input image data are maintained, a four-color conversion circuit with chromatic changes in which the chromaticity and luminance of input image data are not necessarily maintained, and a selector for switching between the outputs from the two conversion circuits according to a level detection signal from a level detection circuit that detects whether the level of input image data is equal to 100% white level or higher. Display data from the selector is supplied to a liquid crystal section that displays an image by four-color pixels of red, green, blue, and white. The image data conversion circuit controls the light emission quantity of a backlight (BL) as white color, and converts input image data so that the level of data displayed on the liquid crystal section becomes uniform.

Disclosed herein is a liquid-crystal display device capable of reducing leakage of light under a black state due to scattering from a liquid-crystal layer, and having high-contrast ratio, excellent image quality performance. The liquid-crystal display device comprises: a liquid-crystal panel including one pair of polarizers disposed on one pair of substrates, a liquid-crystal layer held in sandwiched form between the pair of substrates, and a group of electrodes formed on at least one of the pair of substrates for applying an electric field to the liquid-crystal layer; and a light source unit disposed outside the pair of substrates. The liquid-crystal layer includes a liquid-crystal material having an ordinary-light refractive index of at least 1.46, but up to 1.49, an extraordinary-light refractive index of at least 1.54, but up to 1.59, and a mean photoelastic constant of at least 8, but up to 25, and exhibiting a nematic phase.

A liquid crystal display apparatus having first white color light sources and blue and/or red second coloring light sources disposed on a back side of a liquid crystal panel, and an image quality processing calculation circuit for detecting a brightness of input image signals, in accordance with a detection result, controlling intensities of the first white color light sources and/or second coloring light sources and correcting pixel signals to be supplied to the liquid crystal panel.
