A printer having a printer communicator for receiving commands; a thermal line head that prints in line units on thermal roll paper; a multiple line buffer; and a printer controller that controls the thermal line head to print. When the printer communicator receives an image printing command instructing image printing, the printer controller stores the image data specified by the image printing command in the multiple line buffer. When the printer communicator receives a non-image data definition command, the printer controller prints an image on the thermal roll paper by the thermal line head based on the image data stored in the multiple line buffer.

A host device requests a recording device to send first information including model information or sequel information expressed as a value in a first range. The host device determines if the model information or the sequel information is contained in the first information sent from the recording device, and acquires the model information from the first information if the model information is contained in the first information. If the sequel information is contained in the first information, the host device requests transmission of second information containing model information expressed as a value in the second range, and acquires model information from the second information. Based on the acquired recording device model information, the host device writes data stored in the host device to the recording device.

A communication terminal device autonomously activates a specific function predetermined by a host device even when the communication terminal device is off-line when the power turns on. The specific function is a function such as an offline response function or auto-status back (ASB) function for automatically reporting a status of the communication terminal device to the host device. During normal operation, the host device sends this status monitoring command to the communication terminal device to store specific data in nonvolatile memory in the communication terminal device. Printer control prevents a user from pulling on printed roll paper before the printed form is cut from the roll while still providing the printed paper quickly to the user. When a paper sensor detects the trailing end of printed portion of the paper, that portion of paper is held by an ejection roller pair to temporarily stop the end of the paper from being ejected from the ejection opening. Paper slack in the paper transportation path is then determined. A paper cutting and ejection roller driving sequence is then executed based on the slack determination to provide the printed portion of the paper to the user through the opening.

The printer of the present invention prevents loss of print data due to print operation malfunction after the completion of the initialization of print head 3 by detecting error conditions related to the motion of the print head during the initialization of the print head. In the initialization process of print head 3, print head 3 is moved until it is detected by reference position detector 16 located at the left edge of the print area of the printer; after completion of the initial-position detection for print head 3, print head 3 is moved over the entire print area to rightmost move position 37. By moving print head 3 as described above and by checking whether or not the print head has moved correctly, it is possible to detect any error conditions relating to the motion of print head 3.
