Elements of a transmission belt wound around pulleys of a continuously variable transmission each include a body part, a pair of pillar parts, and a pair of side surfaces. The pair of side surfaces each include a first side surface formed on a corresponding one of the pillar parts; and a second side surface formed so as to continue from the first side surface, and located more on an inner circumference side than the first side surface. A pair of the first side surfaces each are formed so as to be inclined toward an inner side of a corresponding one of the pillar parts with respect to an extending direction, from an inner circumference side to an outer circumference side of a ring, of a corresponding one of the second side surfaces continuing from the first side surface, and a pair of the second side surfaces is formed such that the second side surfaces are spaced farther apart from each other as the second side surfaces extend from the inner circumference side to the outer circumference side, and that an angle formed between the pair of the second side surfaces is larger by 0.2 to 0.8 degrees than an opening angle of V-shaped grooves of the pulleys.

In an element of a power transfer belt to be wound around a primary pulley and a secondary pulley of a continuously variable transmission to transfer torque, the distance from a boundary line between a surface positioned on the outer peripheral side of the power transfer belt with respect to a rocking edge portion and the rocking edge portion to a saddle surface is determined from the slip amount due to micro slip which is relative slipping between the element and the primary pulley caused when the primary pulley pushes out the power transfer belt toward the secondary pulley, and the angular speed of the element and the angular speed of a ring in a range in which the power transfer belt is wound around the secondary pulley.

Three links within one width-direction unit are included in respectively different link units. The links in the first row and the sixth row from the right end and the left end of a chain are included in the same link unit. The links in the second row and the fifth row are included in the same link unit. The links in the ninth row and the tenth row are included in the same link unit other than the link unit in which the links in the second row and the fifth row are included. With the above structure, the stress amplitude of the links forming a chain for a chain-type continuously variable transmission can be reduced.

A chain, wound to span between two pulleys each having facing conical surfaces able to change a distance therebetween and sandwiched by the facing conical surfaces, includes: link units each configured such that plate-shaped links, each having openings, are oriented in a chain circumferential direction and arranged in a chain width direction; and pins each extending through the openings of the links of the link units adjacent in the chain circumferential direction and each contacting the conical surfaces of sheaves at both ends thereof. A curvature radius of a shape curve representing a shape of each end face of each pin in a plane perpendicular to the chain circumferential direction is larger at an inner side in a pulley radial direction than at an initial contact point that is a contact point at the time when a load on each pin is 0.

Three links () within one width-direction unit () are included in respectively different link units (). The links in the first row and the sixth row from the right end and the left end of a chain are included in the same link unit (first link unit-). The links in the second row and the fifth row are included in the same link unit (second link unit-). The links in the ninth row and the tenth row are included in the same link unit other than the link unit in which the links in the second row and the fifth row are included (first link unit-or third link unit-). With the above structure, the stress amplitude of the links forming a chain for a chain-type continuously variable transmission can be reduced.

Provided are elements arranged along a ring of a drive power transfer belt wound on pulleys of a belt-drive continuously variable transmission. Each element has a recess at one side of the element and a projection projecting from the other side to fit into the recess of the adjacent element. The projection has a first engagement portion provided at its base side such that a predetermined engagement gap is created on the radially outer side when the projection fits in the recess of the adjacent element, and a second engagement portion provided at the tip side of the projection and decreasing in diameter toward the tip of the projection from the first engagement portion.
