A combustion chamber arrangement for a direct fuel injected internal combustion engine wherein the combustion chamber is formed in part by a recess in the piston head. Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber so as to be introduced on one side of the recess with a spark plug being positioned so that its gap lies diametrically opposite the fuel injector. An arrangement is provided for introducing a swirl to the flow of fuel and the combustion chamber recess is canted so that its lower surface is deeper where the fuel first enters then on the other side so as to improve flame propagation and complete combustion while maintaining a high compression ratio.

An improved oil pump drive arrangement and pressure relief valve therefore for an internal combustion engine. The oil pump is disposed externally of the engine around a shaft that extends through the body of the engine. This extending portion of the shaft drives at least one engine accessory through a pulley which axially overlaps and circumferentially surrounds the oil pump housing to provide a compact engine construction.

A cylinder head arrangement for a direct injected internal combustion engine and particularly one having multiple valves. The cylinder head configuration is such that the injector can be positioned centrally in the combustion chamber and disposed below the overlying ports, which preferably are the inlet ports without significantly detracting from their flow area or without requiring sharp curvature or bends in their configuration that could restrict air flow.

A cylinder head construction for a direct injected internal combustion engine wherein a spark plug well is formed in the cylinder head and penetrates through its combustion chamber surface at the periphery of the combustion chamber. The opening of the nozzle receiving portion of the this well is relieved around the outer peripheral portion thereof so as to avoid the formation of an edge that can deteriorate through cracking.

Direct injected cylinder head

A cylinder head and high pressure mechanical fuel pump drive for an overhead cam shaft internal combustion engine. The cylinder head in the area of one of its cam shafts is formed with an extending ledge to which a fuel pump mounting member is affixed. This ledge and the mounting member are formed with a bore that receives a cylindrical portion of the housing of the fuel pump and which portion journals the pump driveshaft. A simple O-ring seal seals the pump mechanism in this area from the cam shaft chamber and facilitates a driving connection between the end of the cam shaft and the pump driveshaft.
