An image communication apparatus converts image data received through a communication line into bit image data to be reproduced as a visible image by means of using a data converting unit and a reproducing unit. The apparatus converts data from a data processing apparatus into bit image data to be reproduced as a visible image by means of using the data converting unit and the reproducing unit, so as to accomplish an efficient system as a whole.

A facsimile apparatus prints out a received image interrupted during the reception by the same process for both the interruption of a communication line and the power failure of a power supply. A bit pattern called a page interruption code which does not appear in normal code data is used as data to be overwritten to erase the past image data stored in a buffer memory. In a decoding process, a function to detect an RTC code which is a normal page end code and a function to detect the page interruption code are provided so that the image interrupted during the reception is printed out to at least the last point of the received image.

An image forming apparatus forms interpolating image data of a plurality of lines subjected to smoothing processing including original image data from the original image data. The apparatus selects and outputs image data of a predetermined number of lines corresponding to a reduction ratio from among the image data of the plurality of lines. A reduced image subjected to smoothing processing with high picture quality without loss of information of original lines is thereby obtained.

An image reading apparatus for photoelectrically reading an image (e.g. as used in facsimile apparatus, digital copying machines, etc.) includes a reference member provided at a reading position within the image reading apparatus; a reading device for reading, at the reading position, an image of at least one of (i) an original document and (ii) the reference member, and for generating image data representative of the read image; a memory unit for previously storing as reference data, data obtained by reading the reference member with the reading device; a correcting device for correcting image data obtained by reading an original document with the reading device; using the reference data stored in the memory unit; a discriminating device for discriminating whether the original document is present at the reading position by comparing position data, obtained by reading the image at the reading position, with the reference data stored in the memory unit; and a control unit for controlling the memory unit to store the position data to replace the reference data, when the discriminating device discriminates that the original document is not present at the reading position.

Image reading apparatus

A facsimile apparatus has a first coder for coding image data by a one-dimensional coding method or a two-dimensional coding method, and a second coder for performing coding by a second coding method different from these coding methods. When the amount of code of one line coded by the first coder exceeds a predetermined amount, coding by the first coder is suspended and the image data are coded upon making a changeover to coding by the second coder. In addition, a code resulting from coding by the one- or two-dimensional coding method and a code resulting from coding by the second coding method can be received and decoded.

Facsimile apparatus

A data processing apparatus comprises: code analyzing means for analyzing input code data encoded by a two-dimension encoding system; developing means for developing the code data in accordance with an analysis result by the code analyzing means, to produce decoded data; and means for stopping the analysis by the code analyzing means by detecting a horizontal mode code by the code analyzing means, and resuming the analysis by the code analyzing means by the completion of the development of the analyzed code data by the developing means. The code analyzing means and the developing means are parallelly operated, and upon detection of the horizontal mode code, the analysis by the code analyzing means is temporarily stopped until the development of the analyzed code data is over.

A decoding device for two-dimensional codes employs a first serial reference line signal which assumes the value '1' only at the change point from black to white, and a second reference line signal which assumes the value '1' only at the change point from white to black, either of which is selected according to the color of the start pixel. The end of a reference line can be identified by the value '1' in both reference line signals. The decoding device can thus achieve high-speed development of two-dimensional codes without a large-scale logic circuit.

An image communication system comprises a memory for storing information on a function of a destination receiving machine, a reader for reading a document image, an image memory for storing the read image data, a transmitter for transmitting the image data stored in the image memory, a console unit for designating a memory transmission mode, and a control unit for controlling, in the memory transmission mode, the reading of the document image in accordance with the information stored in the memory means and storing the read image data into the image memory.

An image data encoding/decoding device has a memory for parallel data input/output, a data input unit, a data output unit, an encoding unit, a decoding unit, and a memory control unit. Separate encoding and decoding units are employed to ensure efficient encoding/decoding operations. The image data are handled in serial form in the input, output, encoding and decoding units and in parallel form only at the input to or output from the memory, so that these units can effect simultaneous parallel functions in mutually independent manner. Also, efficient access to the memory is ensured by the memory control unit, which handles simultaneous requests for access from various units according to a predetermined order of priority.
