A multi-section folding apparatus has two outer formers which are respectively provided on both sides of a pair of inner formers which are defined by a pair of upper and/or lower formers of a vertical two-stage former folding machine in such a manner that the outer formers are positioned at the same level as that of the inner formers and with a slight spacing provided therebetween, thereby forming a quadruple former assembly. Two groups of turn bar mechanisms are disposed in such a manner that the course of each of the halved traveling sheets which are obtained by halving a traveling sheet and which are fed toward the two inner formers along their respective ones of the four travel lanes is changed to any one of the other three travel lanes. It is therefore possible to issue a newspaper made up of six to eight sections by means of straight folding without lowering the production speed. In addition, it is possible, by virtue of the turn bar mechanisms, to issue a newspaper made up of an odd-number section in addition to an even-number section, and also to set as desired the number of pages of each of the sections constituting a newspaper.

A folding machine is composed of a mechanism for longitudinally dividing W-width travelling webs into two parts and overlaying one web on the other, the mechanism being mainly constituted by a former having the configuration of an inverted triangle with the base having a length equivalent to the W-width of a travelling web, and a slitter knife; a vertical pair of mechanisms for longitudinally folding the 1/2 W-width travelling webs into two parts which is mainly constituted by a pair of formers having the configuration of an inverted triangle with the base having a length equivalent to the 1/2 W-width of the travelling webs, the pair being veritcally disposed on the downstream side of the slitting and gathering mechanism at the same position with respect to the lateral direction of the travelling webs; a mechanism for cutting and folding the 1/4 W-width travelling webs in the lateral direction thereof; and a means for combining the route for the 1/2 W-width travelling webs which are discharged from the upper folding mechanism with the route of those which are discharged from the lower folding mechanism. The folding machine may be further provided with one or more color printed page rearranging means. Two folding machines may be combined with each other to deal with the printing of a newspaper having a great number of pages.

A pair of three cylinders train units and a four cylinder train unit are provided in relationship such that a pair of impression cylinders of the former are adjacent to a pair of blanket cylinders of the latter, respectively. The blanket cylinders of the latter are switched between a first position in which the blanket cylinders make contact with each other and with their respective plate cylinders and a second position in which the blanket cylinders are isolated from each other, make contact with their respective plate cylinders and with their respective impression cylinders of the three cylinder train units. The switching between extreme positions can be completed in one motion by an angle increase shifting mechanism using gears which are added to the switching means. Throw-off means for the blanket cylinders can be diverged independently and branchingly from each extreme position by a pin clutch mechanism which is added to the switching means. In order to prevent any racing of the cylinders each throw-off position is defined within the range of which teeth of gears meshing at the extreme positions are not out of gearing.

A folding mechanism for a printing press comprising a frame of the printing press, a folding cylinder rotatably mounted on said frame, an eccentric member fixedly secured to said frame, said eccentric member having first and second holes formed therein, a sun gear shaft inserted in the first hole of said eccentric member and fixedly secured thereto, said sun gear shaft having a sun gear formed at one end thereof, a gear box rotatably mounted on said sun gear shaft, and a drive shaft rotatably mounted on said frame at one end thereof, the other end of said drive shaft being fixedly secured to said gear box and adapted to rotate together. The improved folding mechanism further comprising a pair of idler gears rotatably mounted in said gear box adapted in mesh with said sun gear, a pair of folding blade shafts rotatably mounted on said gear box, each of said folding blade shafts having a plurality of folding blades and a driving gear mounted thereon, said driving gears being adapted to mesh with said idler gears and one of said driving gears being adapted to move in axial direction out of engagement of said idler gear, a manually-operated mechanism for interrupting the drive to one of said folding blade shafts for silencing the folding blades associated therewith, and a segment gear fixedly mounted on said gear box for locking said one of folding blade shafts against rotation when said one of driving gears is moved in axial direction out of engagement of one of said idler gears to engage with said segment gear.

Folding mechanism for a printing press

In a mechanism for selectively obtaining two extreme positions of printing cylinders, i.e. a contact of four cylinders except an impression cylinder and a contact of five cylinders including the impression cylinder, through effecting angular displacements of eccentric sleeves attached to respective printing cylinders simultaneously by a common link mechanism, an angle increase shifting mechanism is interposed between the starting end of the link mechanism and the end of an actuator. Whereby, the pair of printing cylinders can be directly shifted from one to the other extreme positions by a single stroke of the actuator. A member attached to a main shaft of the angle increase shifting mechanism is divided into three pieces of a front piece, center piece and a rear piece, and the center piece is adapted to be selected engaged by and disengaged from the front and rear pieces by means of a pin clutch mechanism. Whereby, the shifting to the intermediate mode is possible independently and branchingly from either of the two extreme positions after completion of the switching to either positions.

A device for mounting a plastic film based resin plate for use in printing on a plate cylinder has a groove formed along one longitudinal side edge of each of two members having a symmetrical semicircular section and constituting a plate cylinder, each of said two members consisting of a plate cylinder proper and a plate cylinder outer ring, a fixing member made of a resilient material and having a wedge-shaped protrusion adapted to fit into said groove, said fixing member being fixedly secured to a freely rotatable support shaft which is mounted at a position adjacent to groove and is connected through a linkage to a first operating rod. The device further comprises a support shaft mounted at a position adjacent to the other longitudinal side edge of each of said two members, said support shaft having fitted thereon and fixedly secured thereto a tension member formed with a groove and a holding member having formed thereon a protrusion adapted to fit into said groove, another support shaft adapted to be rotated by means of an operating rod, and a cam for operating the tension member and a cam for operating the holding member fixedly secured to said another shaft. These cams are arranged in such an angular relationship that the tension member is kept away from the holding member when the operating rod is located at an open position, and the protrusion of the holding member is fitted into the groove of the tension member when the operating rod is located at a locking position, and further the tension member and the holding member are rotated together away from said other longitudinal side edge while the protrusion remains fitted into the groove when the operating rod is rotated from the locking position to a tensioning position.
