An apparatus for measuring transient earth current includes a detection electrode and a second electrode disposed beneath the surface of the earth in vertical alignment with one another at depths greater than those to which electromagnetic waves generated above the surface of the earth having commercial power line frequencies penetrate, such that the electrical resistance between the detection electrode and the second electrode is on the order of several tens of thousands of ohms, and a charge detector for detecting only high frequency components of a current flowing between the detection electrode and the second electrode. On the basis of these detected high frequency components, the likelihood of an occurance of an earthquake may be determined.

The water lubricity of ceramic materials is improved by a method including causing friction of the ceramic materials in the presence of water, thereby forming silanol groups on surfaces undergoing the friction, supplying the surfaces with a water-soluble silane coupling agent having alkoxyl groups to hydrolyze the alkoxyl groups into silanol groups, and reacting the silanol groups formed by the hydrolyzation of the alkoxyl groups with the silanol groups formed on the surfaces, thereby forming a siloxane film having siloxane bonds on the surfaces.

Method of improving water lubricity of ceramics

Described herein is a chromium oxide-based ceramic material obtained by sintering a powder mixture consisting of chromium oxide powder and 0.1-90 wt % of chromium carbide powder based on the total amount of the powder mixture. The sintered product has not only a small coefficient of friction over a wide temperature range from normal to high temperature but also excellent deflection resistance and high density with less pores, which are suitable for application as a sliding material.

The present invention is characterized by ceramic materials comprising ceramic sintered bodies consisting of (1) 1-90 wt % chromium carbide and the remainder carbonic titanium nitride; (2) 1-90 wt % chromium carbide, 0.1-5 wt % B.sub.4 C and the remainder titanium carbo-nitride; or (3) either of the above compositions plus less than 95 wt % of a metal boride such as Ti or Zr. A device for the detection of the center of rotation of a rotating object under test comprises means for illuminating a laser beam on at least one position on the surface of the object thereby generating an interference fringe, means for subjecting the resultant reflected scattered laser beams to spectral analysis by the laser Doppler effect thereby finding the velocity of rotation of the position at which the interference fringe is formed on the surface, and means for determining the center of rotation on the basis of the velocity so found. Protection of the spectral analysis from the adverse effect of the pedestal component is accomplished by causing interference fringes to be formed at a plurality of positions on the surface of the object under test or by placing in the optical path for one of the pair of laser beams a prism capable of continuously modulating the laser frequency.

An article to be coated by vacuum deposition of a metallic substance is given a preliminary surface treatment to ensure perfect deposition of the metallic substance. This preliminary surface treatment is effected by placing the article under treatment in an atmosphere of the same reaction gas vacuumized to the same degree as during vacuum deposition, causing a hot filament to release thermionicelectrons within the atmosphere thereby inducing the phenomenon of discharge, and causing ions by the discharge to bombard the article under treatment.

A refractory ceramic body having excellent bending strength and high hardness and with little porosity is obtained by sintering a powdery mixture comprising 5 to 95% by weight of a titanium carbonitride and 95 to 5% by weight of a metal boride such as metal diborides, e.g. titanium diboride, W.sub.2 B.sub.5 and Mo.sub.2 B.sub.5 at a temperature of 1700.degree. to 1800.degree. C. Further improvements can be obtained by partial replacement of the above mentioned components with elementary boron, titanium carbide or titanium nitride or when the titanium carbonitride component is a combination of at least two kinds of titanium carbonitrides having different chemical compositions relative to the proportion of the carbon and nitrogen.
