A coordinate input apparatus includes a light projecting unit configured to project light parallelly to an effective coordinate input region, a reflection unit configured to retroreflect the light projected by the light projecting unit, and a light receiving unit configured to receive light from the light projecting unit or the reflection unit. The coordinate input apparatus includes a moving unit configured to move a set of the light projecting unit, light receiving unit, and reflection unit in a direction perpendicular to the effective coordinate input region in order to ensure a light amount with which a pointed position in the effective coordinate input region can be calculated based on variations of a light amount distribution obtained from the light receiving unit.

Coordinate input apparatus

A coordinate input apparatus includes a first housing and a second housing each of which incorporate at least two sensor units each including one of the light projecting unit and one of the light receiving unit. A pointed position to an effective coordinate input region is calculated based on variations of a light amount distribution obtained from the light receiving units of each of the first and second housings. In each of the first and second housings, the field range of a light receiving unit is almost parallel to the effective coordinate input region, the optical axis direction of the light receiving unit is a direction perpendicular to a line segment connecting the barycenters of at least two sensor units in a single housing, and the field range is set to be asymmetric to the optical axis direction.

Position information of a first sensor unit and a second sensor unit is calculated using angle information of peaks calculated from a light amount distribution having a plurality of peaks detected by light-receiving unit of the second sensor unit from light emitted by light-emitting unit of the first sensor unit. The coordinates of a pointed position are calculated based on the position information of the first sensor unit and the second sensor unit and a change in a received light amount distribution that occurs due to a pointing to a coordinate input region detected by the light-receiving units. Here, the light-emitting units of the respective multiple sensor units are arranged in known positions relative to the light-receiving units.

A coordinate input apparatus includes retroreflecting units at two opposite sides of a rectangular-shaped coordinate input effective region, and a plurality of sensor units provided at the two sides. Each of the sensor units includes a light receiving unit for receiving light that reaches the light receiving unit, a light projecting unit for projecting light toward a retroreflecting unit provided at one of the two sides, which opposes the light projecting unit, and a surface light emitting unit for emitting even diffused light from a band-shaped surface. Each of the sensor units simultaneously detects, by the light receiving unit, light that has been projected by the light projecting unit and reflected back by the retroreflecting unit at the side opposing the light projecting unit, and light that has been emitted by surface light emitting units of a plurality of sensor units at the side opposing the light projecting unit.

The invention aims to provide a coordinate input apparatus having high detection reliability and high efficiency and to control the influence of ambient light using a simple structure. The apparatus detects a light spot flashing on and off in a predetermined cycle and incident at a desired position on a coordinate input screen, and includes a detection device having photoelectric conversion elements corresponding to N pixels for detecting a light spot coordinate. The difference between signals from photoelectric elements in light emission state and in light non-emission state at each N pixel is found, and the smaller of the difference signals of the m-th pixel having the maximum difference signal is set as a threshold value. Effective pixels are identified based on the threshold value, and the coordinate is calculated by using the difference data of the selected effective pixels.
